Looking for a small laptop, preferably with upgradable HD and memory
My old laptop just died (probably a fried CPU), so I'm looking for another one to replace it. My previous one was a Lenovo Thinkpad X61 with an AMD CPU. I do like Thinkpads, but I'm a bit disgruntled with the fact that it died so quickly (16 months), so I may be willing to try other brands. I also suspect that the AMD CPU overheated very quickly, so I'm looking for an Intel-based chip this time.
It is very important to me that the laptop be no larger than 13" so that it will fit in my safe. Low weight would be great too, but that's not as important.
I do have some parts that I can use from my older laptop (160 GB SSD, 8 GB RAM), but it seems like a lot of the newer laptops I'm looking at do not allow you to upgrade your memory or hard drive. This is the part that I'm most confused about: how can you tell whether a laptop is upgradable? Do you have to just search reviews for every laptop model you come across? Why is there a trend towards "non-upgradable" machines? Is this more applicable towards smaller laptops, where they need to lose the modularity in order to make the product more compact?
