How do Craigslist people get my real phone number?

RUsum1 10,298 1,801 April 27, 2013 at 07:01 PM
Whenever I post stuff onto Craigslist I put my Google Voice phone number however I'll get texts sent directly to my main phone number about some of my ads. I went back and verified that I left the Google Voice phone number so how are people getting my real number? I never respond to texts sent directly to my phone because I'm sure they are scams somehow.

Double check settings in your google number settings, when you call someone back call with google voice.

Did you even read my post?

I don't get to check my email as frequently as I can check my phone but I may start doing that. I'm not sure that matters though since my real phone number isn't displayed.

They are contacting me first so it's not a matter of when I contact them back they are seeing my real number.

Sorry guess I didnt read correctly. I also only use my google number but not until many emails to feel the person out. Would really like to see this solved so I have an idea for the future.

I just did 3-4 transactions this weekend, I hadn't done anything since they implemented the "not using your real email" thing. So that was way nice. I agree with the 'use email until you have 3-4 messages" You can tell if it is SPAM in the 1st one nearly every time!

Maybe post one of your listings here and we can try to see how they are getting it? You aren't supposed to sell anything on this site though, and trades have to be $5 or less...so...try to post something cheap I guess...

Why not have a controlled test where you get a family member/friend to text you using your GV number and see the results on your phone.

Definitely, I always do this. I had one major f'up with g voice at one point and couldn't figure out why. Sat there trouble shooting and played with the settings on google voice and BAM. I'm set.

Not all of the texts are like that, only some. Many of the texts I get are through Google Voice (They appear from a random number with a different area code but from within the text it shows the person's real phone number). But then I get some responses that don't come with the real phone number in the text as if it's sent directly to my real number instead of my Google Voice number.
