Has anybody used this stuff before? Is it convincing, or is it obviously just a bunch rubber chunks? Does it smell like a pile of hot tires when the sun is out?

I've used rubber mulch at the last two houses that I've owned. This particular kind looks like a bunch of small rubber chunks that have been colored so it is not realistic at all besides the color. (The upper line of the Rubberific brand at Lowes is realistic with an occasional chunk of rubber in it but it is usually $11-$12 a bag.) It really doesn't produce a smell once it has been out for a few days.

Even with a weed barrier this stuff needs to be spread fairly thick even with fabric put down first. So keep that in mind when calculating the amount you need.

no reason you cant put it on top of wood or other existing ground cover, but if your wood mulch is old or rotting, you prob want to move it ...

as far as how this mulch looks, in your hands, yes you can tell/see it is rubber. On the ground, you can't tell the difference without sticking your face in it. It looks almost exactly like any $5 bag of standard chopped wood mulch. And the nice thing about it is, it always looks like a new application of mulch. No fading. and to reiterate, doesnt smell like rubber, unless you put your face in it Smilie

I was reluctant to try it, but happy I did and will be using it going forward. looks great, saves $ and hassle ... check the reviews and youll see a good number of user photos too. not everyone likes it of course, but overall gets very positive reviews.

Bought 200 bags for a playground just last week, had it delivered on friday..........looks great and the best deal out there.

fyi if you order online, I used the chat option and told them I had a 10% off lowes coupon and they told me to place my order and give them the order number (the chat person waited while I did this) and they applied a 10% discount no questions asked!

FYI I was talking to a landscaper friend of mine about this and he cautioned that he would not use this in plant beds, under heavy sun the mulch will heat up and 'burn' your plants (basically cook them) especially smaller flowers lower to the ground.

Do anyone of you use rubber mulch in front yard around shrubs or rose plants etc... Are they safe for plants to use instead of wood mulch. I read many resources online where some sites claim rubber mulch is okay to use around plants. Please share your thoughts or experience. Thanks!

I've used this rubber mulch for two years now and no issues! My plants have never grown better since I've used this.
I wish they had black, but lowes and Walmart only carry the black and it's 9-10 a bag waiting on a sale for black rubber mulch

I'm looking to put up a playground for my 2 year old this summer (I bought the frontpage Gorilla Outdoor Safari set when it was on sale). Do I need 200 bags to get enough mulch down for that kind of a playset? Your help is much appreciated.

depends on how big your area is. I have 550 sq to fill with the rubber mulch with 4" depth so thats why I needed that much. You need to calculate your area

From what I understand, the playset is 12.5 X 11.5 feet in size. I assume I need a couple of feet on each side, so an area of 16.5 x 15.5 feet, with a square footage of 190 sq. ft. Say 200 sq. ft. for good measure. How many bags of this mulch would I need to provide adequate protection on the playground? I found some calculators online, but they seem to vary quite a bit...

16.5 x 15.5 = 255.75 sq ft..........assuming you use the minimum depth of 3" each bag covers 3 sf so that's 85.25 bags........I would order 100 to be safe and return what you don't use

Thanks! That makes sense. I'm going to see if I can talk my wife into this.

I like it for small areas. Keep in mind that leaves will blow in it and I don't know how you get them out easily.
