What is a VPN? A VPN is a virtual private network, and allows you to securely tunnel your connection to the VPN server, so that it appears that all your data originates from that server. VPNs are also useful on public networks in order to prevent other users from snooping your connection, as all information through the tunnel is encrypted.

From the privacy faq:

TorGuard's Privacy Policy

In an effort to protect our clients' and site visitors privacy and rights, TorGuard has established a Privacy Policy which explains what information we gather on visitors and what we do with information that we gather.

This Privacy Policy governs the manner in which TorGuard collects, uses, maintains and discloses information collected from users of this Web site (each, a "User").
Privacy

Users' privacy is very important to TorGuard. We are committed to safeguarding the information Users entrust to TorGuard.
The Information We Collect

TorGuard collects personally identifiable information from Users through online forms for ordering products and services. We may also collect information about how Users use our Web site, for example, by tracking the number of unique views received by the pages of the Web site or the domains from which Users originate. We use "cookies" to track how Users use our Web site.
How We Use Information

TorGuard may use personally identifiable information collected through our Web site to contact Users regarding products and services offered by TorGuard and its trusted affiliates, independent contractors and business partners, and otherwise to enhance Users' experience with TorGuard and such affiliates, independent contractors and business partners. At no time will TorGuard's database of users ever be sold to any entity for the purpose of marketing or mailing lists. Personal information will not be sold or otherwise transferred to our business partners without your prior consent, except that we will disclose the information we collect to third parties when, in our good faith judgment, we are obligated to do so under applicable laws.

Always read the terms, never trust a FAQ.

Tor Project a free Open Source program that may be useful for people that don't need the full functionality of Premium VPN Services.
Tor protects you by bouncing your communications around a distributed network of relays run by volunteers all around the world: it prevents somebody watching your Internet connection from learning what sites you visit, and it prevents the sites you visit from learning your physical location. Tor works with many of your existing applications, including web browsers, instant messaging clients, remote login, and other applications based on the TCP protocol.

Tor has nothing to do with TorGuard (the service being offered here)

Here are some alternative VPN services that have large selection of servers (worldwide)proxy.sh is $5 month

Setting up BT software Vuze (used to be call Azureus) to only use VPN connection (won't connect if VPN connection not available.)
Here is a tutorial of it.
http://wiki.hidemyass.com/Tutoria...hrough_VPN
Here's a tutorial for utorrent: http://wiki.hidemyass.com/Tutoria...IP_binding
(Remember to un-check make new firewall rule in utorrent settings/prefs)

Enter the interface identifier into the field next to "Bind to local IP address or interface" in the settings.
Note that the interface identifier is named different on every system, so make sure to check how exactly it is called on yours.
In their example, it is "eth15" for OpenVPN, "net2" for PPTP" and "net1" for L2TP.

Make sure the checkbox next to "Enforce IP bindings even when interfaces are not available" is checked;
otherwise it can happen that Vuze keeps downloading without using the VPN.

If the Vuze setup is done correctly, it will ONLY use your VPN connection. If you didn't login to your VPN service, Vuze won't work.

Have used TorGuard for the last 8 months. I'll be renewing my service once my year is up. Some private trackers block your connection when downloading while connected so speeds can crawl but public trackers don't have the same issue. I can stand the "slower speeds" and try to use Canadian servers for faster speeds.

Also have setup the VPN to work on my Ubuntu system although not nearly as smooth as in Windows using the TorGuard portable program (can load it on a thumb drive and run).

**EDIT**

I also use different VPN servers when I stream Netflix due to some content being available in other countries outside the US, example, Dexter is available for streaming using a Canadian VPN server where in the US Dexter is not available for streaming.
WHAT???? Dexter is on Canadian VPN? here I been buying the damn blu-rays

Yep, just checked. Seasons 1-6 available for streaming.

All you need is a Canadian connection though, not necessarily a VPN unless you are not in Canada.

What the heck, that's awesome! I have Astrill, so I'll definitely be trying out Canadian Netflix with Dexter!

When using these services is it prudent to not do any private business while being connected to the VPN (since everything goes through their servers they can see everything you do, including transmitted passwords etc.)?

so you guys are using this service to use bittorrent? or are you using it when you're on any public network? I'm ignorant to this stuff.

Some people use it for internet marketing, via blackhat SEO.

Looks good but will pass on this one-time discount; shouldn't be too long before a recurring discount comes along.

any recommendations (preferably free) for a proxy/vpn to watch youtube and twitch? Time Warner has lots of problems at peak times. i use proxyfree for youtube and it works great. i haven't found anything for Twitch though. i can sit and watch 720+ Twitch streams all day without problems. around 6-7pm they become a slideshow. youtube is exactly the same. i can have a 1080 video up without proxy and it will sit there buffering forever. i put the exact same link into proxyfree and it downloads instantly without any buffering.

I've been with Torguard since january and would recommend them.. Great service and support.

The real reason I chose them is because they have OpenVPN that works in Beijing. Torguard and astrill so far are the only vpn companies I've found that work in china. Everything else is usually blocked.
StrongVPN works in China too. I'm in Suzhou.

If passwords are entered on secure web pages (HTTPS), then even your VPN service provider can't read them.

I had Private Internet Access. Didnt like it. Had too much trouble with password and logging into the account.
This is who I am using now. I am trying it out for a month. So far so good. I just go to my email confirmation page to paste in my pwd.

Their whole year is $35.

Unless their client program installs their own cert and intercepts the connection. Not sure who if any VPN providers do this but just wanted to throw it out there.
