Deal Details

Hi everyone,

I was going to wait until Memorial day weekend, but found this offer to good to pass up. I just picked up the following washer and dryer for $775 after rebates, both have great reviews.

Energy Efficient Washer: http://www.sears.com/maytag-3.6-c...ockType=G1

Dryer: http://www.sears.com/maytag-7.4-c...ockType=G3

They are already on sales at Sears.com for $584.99 a piece. Right now you can stack the "SAVENOW" code for 15% off the additional savings, along with "SEARS35OFF300AFFILIATEDEALS" for $35 off.

All of may is Maytag Month, so on the above models you can get a $200 rebate visa gift card by mailing in this rebate form: http://www.sears.com/ue/home/s_ma...050113.pdf

In all I paid $775 after taxes, even less if you live in a tax free state.Big Grin

Wouldn't it make more sense to buy the first one with 25% back in points the use the points to buy the second one with 15% off
You may not the the 25% points credit before the 15% expires.

LOL, there is no Maytag.LMAO

Maytag was destroyed from the inside by the UAW. Subsequently, Whirlpool bought Maytag in 05-06. Whirlpool continued to produce 'real' Maytag appliances for the first year or two.

The current production "Maytag" machines (excluding 'Neptune' models, which still use Maytag designs and parts) are rebranded direct drive or new design belt drive Whirlpool machines with inflated prices.

Instead of buying this, buy Whirlpool branded Whirlpool and save $ or buy Speed Queen and get a better product.
I was told that the Sears brand "Kenmore" is also made by Whirlpool

Top loading dryers DO exist, you just don't know about them.

Partially correct - 'Kenmore' is made by the lowest bidder on a given contract.

They used to be primarily Whirlpool, Electrolux (Frigidaire), GE, or Maycor (Maytag) products.

These days the lower end brands (LG, Haier, Samsung, Danby, etc.) make a lot of that stuff.

It seems that LG and Samsung gets good reviews, I was under the immpression that they were the better of the brands. If I am incorrect, which are the best brands, I am in the market for a washer and gas dryer. Thanks

All things being equal, I would buy a Speed Queen. You can expect a residential SQ washer to outlast most other brands commercial machines.

LG and Samsung are worlds apart quality-wise. I would not be comfortable recommending LG, as they generally have poor build quality and parts availability is unpredictable when something does break. I live in a mid-sized city 2 hours south of Atlanta and only one servicer in town can get parts for LG. The local parts distributor can't.

I would own a Samsung - they are reasonably well-built, reliable, and parts are available through any Whirlpool parts distributor.

then i retract my previous statement and replace it with.. top loading shouldn't exist... it seems moronic to try to dry clothes that way... the reverse feature is nice, but hell they should be throwing those in nowadays with the normal tumble dyes... oh well...

I won't argue that point. Part of the reason F&P can get away with it is that the matching washer has an incredibly high speed spin cycle - the clothes are nearly dry before they go into the dryer.

Didn't Amana buy Speed Queen many years ago? I still have my (still working) Amana washer and (gas) dryer after 17+ years. I was told that the Speed Queen part of the washer and dryer is the stainless steel basket/dryer cage respectively. The appliance salesman made clear that Speed Queen was the preferred brand of laundramats.

Yes. At one time Amana, Speed Queen, and Maytag were all owned by missile defense system mega-conglomerate Raytheon Corp (somewhat fitting as the microwave - an Amana - was accidentally invented in a failed attempt at creating a better radar. Amana microwaves are still called "RadarRanges").

To this day, Speed Queen still uses some Amana and Maycor parts. Speed Queen/Huebsch is now a separate entity, while Amana was transferred to Whirlpool as part of the sale of Maytag/Maycor and its holdings. Sadly, Whirlpool has changed its branding strategy to position Amana as a low end product. Traditionally, Amana has been a higher-end product (Only following Jade and Jenn-Aire in the Maycor brand heirarchy - neither of which made laundry products)

Speed Queen recently (approx 4-5 yrs) re-entered the domestic laundry market after a long hiatus prompted by a non-compete agreement that was part of the split from Raytheon.

Speed Queen/Huebsch dominates the commercial (laundromat/hotel/military) market.

Which one is better? Front loader or top loader?
The general rule is that front loading washers are better. They use less water, they are less likely to become unbalanced and they are more gentle on your clothes. If you have clothes you typically hand wash, you might actually be able to put them in a front loading washer instead.

front loaders use less water, but tend to get moldy/mildewy. Top loaders tend to be bigger, and the biggest front loaders aren't even close to the size capacities of top loaders unless you go commercial models. Other things can be said either way, but theyd on't hold their ground

Does any place sell Speed Queen with option for 0% financing? I only see individual dealers offering it for sale.
