Not a bad deal, IMO. It seems like the old firmware had problems with a constant activity light (probably wearing out the drive), but the newer firmware is better per a newegg review.

If all else fails, you could just harvest the drive if it doesn't perform to your liking. The dual-core processor is nice, but I think the limiting factor is the 128mb of RAM... TU sr71!

Looking at posting history here at SD, this seems about $20 cheaper than the best deal, it's been $100 a few times...

Has anyone actually harvested the drive? I'm thinking it would be a decent deal to get the 2tb drive that I need and have a nas enclosure to use down the road (if I ever find a use for it).

The issue seems to be with the transfer speeds, many people are complaining that it is very slow (10 MBps). May be fine for a network backup but might not be sufficient for HD streaming. There have been some 3TB's for under $100 in enclosures (I got one for ~90 a few weeks) that you can harvest. I'm guessing that the ram is the limiting factor in the NAS, maybe it can be re-purposed for something else.

From reviews:
"If you wanna torture your self... get this.
Got one of this for only $109 (2TB). Good deal? NO!!!! If you find one of this at $50, grab one and rip it open and salvage the hard drive inside. Don't dare trying to make it work for you. It works alright. Installs fast. But man! The speed is killing me!!! One click on the dashboard makes you wait between 15 and 30 sec before anything happens. "

"Snails are faster
Software installed easy. The platform is incredibly slow and I gave up after 18hours and it only transfered 80G... Snails are faster."

I have the dual bay one from newegg a couple of months ago. Firmware update is a must. New formware comes from Lenovo, not Iomega, and it makes it pretty fast. Transfer speeds are on par with direct USB 3.0 connection, spinning disk being the limiting factor here for large file transfers.

I wish newegg had the dual bay on sale for $60 again.

Good price for an ok NAS.
Not worth using without a gigabit network. Using anything slower is painfully slow.
Included software is almost worthless.

Thanks. I have still kept mine for old times sake and they still work. Planning on hooking one up to my Dual Proc Pentium Pro 233/1M one of these days and starting it up. Just the Parallel ports are hard to come by on the newer MBs these days.
