He rather see hot deals on Apple's Macbook products.
They don't exist. Apple won't allow it for current hardware.

It's getting harder and harder for me to pass this up. I keep holding out for Lenovo to release my pipe dream laptop, but I'll never see this system with a TrackPoint, touchscreen, and better battery life. Even two of those three would be awesome, but I may just have to jump on this deal for now.

I was so close to getting a Y500 especially at this price point. Decided to go to Fys (twice) and see one for myself hands on. I was back and forth between portability and performance as I will be traveling overseas for a few months.

I decided that it was a bit to clunky & heavy, plus the plastic sides and 'flashy' gamer look isn't my cup of tea anymore. I ended up sacrificing speed for portability and size. Since I already have a extremely powerful PC, I felt like it would be pointless to have a powerful laptop as well.

Was able to find a Asus UX32VZ with 128SSD (upgrading it to a 512gb Samsung 830) & 10gb ram for $850 practically brand new. Couldnt pass this up, was perfect for me, 13" 1080p, has a Nvidia 620m in it as well and its extremely light.

This is a great deal though for anyone looking for a performance laptop. Hopefully with Hanswell around the corner we will see more laptops that dont have to sacrifice performance for portability.

One downside that I can mention is this is NOT switchable graphics (which I don't understand why at all). The laptop uses the dedicated nvidia 750 all the time and the battery life does suffer. The ultrabay slot is awesome and potentially could get this baby in sli if they release a card to put in there. It can hold a secondary battery too, more manufacturers should use this! Repped!
Here's a card that will go in the Ultrabay slot:

Great deal but will pass on this. Last time the deal was with 12GB of Memory while this time is only 8GB. $70 for 4GB of memory?

This is a much better deal. 12GB doesn't run in dual channel anyway. If you want that much ram buy this and upgrade to 16gb.

Awesome laptop. Got mine for $759 shipped (new) with the 650M, i7, 8gb, 1tb+16gbssd, 1080p. The downsides exist (trackpad is awful, it's not especially light, battery is 3 hrs moderate use) but if you know what you're getting and you need something like this you can't beat it.

So for those who have this, I presume it comes with a single 8GB RAM? what would be a good RAM to match this with to make it 16GB? tia

it comes with 4gbx2

And the price is $849 not $809.

can you add an SSD to the 59371960 model? i was just gonna toss the 16GB SSD and replace it with a 256GB running the OS off of it.. is this possible? or can I only add an SSD to the 59371972 model? they should be the same chasis right?
It doesn't matter what model you get - it's about the BIOS and the hardware slots. I purchased a Y500 with 750M without the SSD (to save $10) a couple weeks ago.

I put in a 64GB mSATA SSD and I can boot from it. I have a new Plextor mSATA 250GB coming in on Tuesday and will move to that too. I also have a ultrabay SATA hard drive sled and have played around with booting from that. All kinds of experience Wink

The Y500 BIOS is kind of funny about booting from the mSATA and USB ports. The BIOS has a timing quirk where it will freeze loading Linux GRUB2 or other loaders I have tried (legacy booting).

The trick I found to work around the timing problem to boot from the mSATA was to put the LAN boot (Ethernet boot) high in the boot order. Putting Ethernet LAN as the first boot device makes the boot take an extra 1 or 2 seconds of time, but it seems to make the system reliably boot from the mSATA or USB drive.

Also I find on the Y500 and a Z580 I have (pretty similar systems, USB ports in same place etc - one is i5 and one is i7).... is that the USB booting can be unreliable from several of my flash drives if I use the F12 menu to pick USB device. HOWEVER, if I pick F2 and go put the flash drive into the boot order (highest) - it works fine.

Of course I wish the BIOS was more reliable and did not have this timing problems - but the workarounds are fine - and I've seen similar problems with other modern systems from Dell and such - so I have to accept that this price the system isn't perfect - and does what I need. 1 or 2 seconds extra bootup time (for the Ethernet LAN boot timeout) is the workaround for a less-than-perfect BIOS.

I hope that helps.
