Is Fried Chicken Racist?

2,651 476 May 22, 2013 at 05:50 AM in News (2) Los Angeles Times
Once again feathers are flying because someone (in this case a Spaniard) offered to serve fried chicken to a person of color. Now the offerer of the fried chicken is branded a racist.

Does eating fried chicken somehow diminish one's humanity? Is it somehow bad? If someone offered to serve me fried chicken I would be happy not angry because I love good fried chicken.

If a golfer of color had offered to make paella for Sergio, would that be equally racist? I think one can be an a-hole without being racist. Or if you are an a-hole to a person of color are you automatically racist?

Tiger, to his credit, has not joined this fray. Perhaps the media are the only people who care and fake offense?

"We will have (Tiger Woods) around every night. We will serve fried chicken." [telegraph.co.uk]

Fuzzy Zoeller said something similar in 1997 [latimes.com]

And any depiction of Obama eating fried chicken is racist according to some [dailymail.co.uk]

OP,
Come on now. It doesn't take a genius to figure out that when a person make a crack about having an African-American over for fried chicken and watermelon, it's a racist comment. because, it's a stereotype.
Stereotypes aren't racist...so which was it?

Is saying that someone with a mullet must have a confederate flag and Skynard TShirt racist? No, it is a stereotype.

Quote from z2g :
It's the intent of the comment or crack that makes it racist. Sergio Garcia's comment regarding Tiger coming over to have fried chicken obviously has to do with the fact that he's part African-American.
So again, it is a stereotype... Is using a stereotype automatically racist? Not at all...there are woman-based stereotypes but there is not a woman race. A headline that reads Sergio Garcia at centre of 'stereotype' storm' doesn't get thousands of clicks though.

And maybe he just thought all Americans really like fried chicken and that is why we are all fat or something? I mean...is there a Madrid Fried Chicken store? No...it is from Kentucky...America is known for Fried Chicken...

Again, I think it's the context of those stereotypical comments. For example, if I were having some Asian friends over for dinner and I made some comments that I should prepare a rice dish, that wouldn't be "racist" if I was genuinely thoughtful.

However, the fried chicken and watermelon cracks are known, nearly-derogatory comments that are associated with African-Americans. And, I think most ppl are aware of it. Now, if I was hanging out with some of my African-American friends and I joke with them that they can come over for some fried chicken and chitlens, that would be cool because they are my friends and we may have an understanding.

With Sergio Garcia, it doesn't take a genius to figure out due to prior issues and animosity between the two that it was a mean-spirited crack based on Tiger's race (being half African-American). He's part Thai too. Why didn't Sergio Garcia joke that he can come over for some Pad Thai or Curry Chicken? It's because that's not a funny, racist crack that would get cheap laughs as would the fried chicken comments.

But, if you think it's cool and not racist, then more power to you. I dare you to make those comments while in the bad parts of Oakland, Camden, or Philly. Let's see how ppl will react to you.....since they're not racist and all, right?

I am fairly certain there was a Sambo's in Washington DC, where I grew up. I haven't thought of that place in years! It defintley closed...I recall the food was great!
yeah the food was awesome and the portions were really generous. just what a growing boy like me needed. especially one summer working a construction job, wrangling concrete forms. we ate at sambos a lot because it was a good value but not cheap, and the waitress liked us so she and the cook gave us extra large portions, extra rolls, big pieces of pie, all that stuff. i learned that summer that tipping 15-20% definitely had an effect on how quickly we got seated, where we were seated, how quickly our food arrived and the extras like i said and just a great experience overall. the bill wasn't all that much in today's dollars but this was mid-70's so it was a different time. the memories! lots of hard work but it was a really fun summer....full of discovery. Wink

Never had the chicken tho. Does that make me racist?
if you're white thjen you are racist just because of your skin. but being judged like that, and as an entire group, isn't racist. go figure.
Quote from Piccaboo :
IIRC it was breakfast only at Sambo's.
not at the sambos i went to.
Quote from finzz2dlft :
The chicken was only served at breakfast?
chicken and waffles maybe? i've never even had that...does that make me intolerant and thereby, racist? i'm sure it does!

Quote :
Maybe the place I went to in DC wasn't sambo's. But I am 99 percent sure it was. Had lunch and dinner there.

But no chicken!
i'm sorry but only a certainty of 100% can be accepted. think hard now. were there placemats the kids could color that had a pic of sambo running away from a tiger? the irony is that sambo wasn't even black as in negro...he was indian! that makes more sense there were tigers in the story doesn't it?

gonna get me some popeyes for lunch
that's racist.

OMG!! Thank you for posting that; I browsed the wiki and found a link to "The Jolly Tiger"! THAT was the restaurant in my old hometown. Jolly Tiger was a renaming effort of Sambo's, but basically the same restaurant.

who are you talking to? if it's me then good, glad to help. they might have changed the names depending on the region, or just chose from several choices because i'm sure "the jolly tiger" wasn't the name of the sambos when they changed. still don't remember what it was though...i think it had "garden" in the name.

That is my point though...it is stereotypical to make a comment that an asian likes rice, or your comments about chicken to friends. It isn't racist though. A stereotypical comment is only also racist if it is said with hate SOLELY because of their ethnicity. CLEARLY Sergio's comments are strictly stereotypical because he doesn't hate Tiger for being black, he hates him for being a better golfer. There is a difference.

I mean, haven't blacks shown us that there is no such thing has a bad word? The way they throw around "n*gga" in music and on the internet like it is nothing has shown us that it isn't a bad word, only when it is said with hate, and even then only some times. Hell, Kanye said it like 50 times on NBC last week.

Not a stock photo; I make Baked Ziti in batches and freeze them in these containers to put in the freezer in the garage. Recently I made about 20 of these so my son could take them home with him. We have had no issues with reheating them after defrosting; in fact it was delicious last night; and no one has complained who has ate mine Nono2

When I make them they sit out on a cooling rack until they are of a temperature low enough for the lids to go on, and go into the freezer; marked with the name and date. It's an assembly line when I duo this laugh out loud

Where he works the crew has a minimum time to eat and eat fast; so this is a quick good meal for them. And I use different types of noodles in it; cork screw as well as ziti noodles; I also use ground beef as well as sausage yummy
