Since there are a lot of questions/queries about rooting etc., here goes (copied from XDA):

1. What is rooting and why is it needed? - Rooting is the process of granting a user admin rights on the device. B&N (as well as every other vendor) blocks you from doing this for your own protection (and so they can charge you for a lot of things). Usually, you should not need this, but sometimes you may. For the B&N HD/HD+, you can do almost everything without rooting. Also, B&N has a catch - if you (or one of your apps) do modify the contents of certain system folders (that can only be done with root access), the device reverts to B&N stock (i.e. factory) settings automatically and wipes out all your modifications. So, for the HD & HD+, unless you know what you are doing and really need root rights, I suggest that you stay away from rooting.

2. What is side-loading? - For the longest time, B&N would let you purchase/download apps only from their own app store. Not only were all apps not available, some were priced higher than the Google Play store. Since OS update v2.1 on the device, B&N now lets you access the Google Play store, so you can get all the apps that everyone with an Android device can get - at the same price. Still, there are some apps that Google Play does not offer based on device compatibility (Whatsapp messenger, for example) that you can load by putting special (.apk) files on an SD Card and then "side-loading" them to the device from the card. If you are a newbie, you should be able to enjoy life with what's in the Google Play store.

3. What is "enable unknown sources"? - As explained in #2, the tablet only lets you get apps from the B&N store or the Google Play store. If you want to download apps from elsewhere (say the Amazon App Store), you need to "enable apps to load from unknown sources". This is usually done via a setting in the "Settings" screens. Unfortunately, B&N has blocked this screen so you cannot get the Amazon App Store on your device easily. To do this, you must do something "extra" that will "enable apps from unknown sources". Again, unless you desperately need an app from somewhere else, you won't need this.

4. I've read the above and decided that I want to root OR to enable unknown sources. What's the easiest way to do this? - There are several ways to achieve this. I thought that the steps mentioned in this thread (thanks to user leapinlar) [xda-developers.com] were the easiest. All you need is the first post in there and in there you are going to need step #1 (that describes how to load anything from the subsequent steps), step #2 (if you need root access) and step #3 (if you need the unknown sources enabled). While step #1 is mandatory to do anything else, you can do #2 or #3 or both.

5. I've read the above and decided that I want to root, enable unknown sources, install CyanogenMod 10.1 - I want it all. What's the easiest way to do this? - Again, several ways to achieve this. Just visit this thread [xda-developers.com] and follow the instructions - alternatively, there's a tutorial link below too. Remember, what you are doing is similar to buying a new car and then modding it - so better know what you are doing.

I'm using Dolphin Browser. User Agent set to Desktop. Firefox works even better w/o any changes to the settings.

as of 6/5, at least one local Walmart has dropped prices as well:

Nook HD+ 16GB - 149
Nook HD+ 32GB - 179

6/5 - Jacksonville Florida (Avenues mall) - PRICE NOT AVAILABLE

Lifted from B/N email: HDTV Adapter for Dad – On Sale!

Just $25. Give Dad our HDTV adapter kit
for his NOOK® HD or HD+ so he can

Walmart online adjusted their prices too; $149 for the HD+. I got my price adjustment from them, after buying it on 5/10 http://www.walmart.com/ip/Nook-HD-16GB/21907395

***[NOOK HD/HD+] Installing CyanogenMod 10.1 for Dummies [xda-developers.com] THIS IS THE TUTORIAL YOU'RE LOOKING FOR***

ANDROID JELLYBEAN INSTALL LINK
(SD only/SD-internal memory) http://forum.xda-developers.com/s...?t=2300132
(Full install - overwrites your original ROM) http://forum.xda-developers.com/s...?t=2263553

Win32 Disk imager to write the bootable SD card img file
http://sourceforge.net/projects/win32diskimager/

Have JB working off my SD card only mode - meaning the original ROM is NOT Rooted (using cm-10.1-20130611-UNOFFICIAL-ovation ROM) . Install for SD-Internal memory or full install are listed on the link. Only missing item on the XDA site is the Win32 disk imager to write the boot SD card img file. Basically..

1. download the CM10 rom and Google Apps to the Nook HD+ using the Nook ROM (the files will be in the /downloads folder)
2. download the SD card img file to your computer
3. use Win32 disk imager to write to the SD card (4gb minimum). The card will only show about 120 megs.
4. completely turn off the Nook (hold power until menu comes on)
5. insert SD card. Turn on Nook. (if you boot into Nook original ROM, try completely turning off, and hold volume +, and power at the same time)
6. see cyanogen mod logo, wait until Clock Work Mod screen comes on.
7. follow the rest of the steps on XDA.

People who brought the nook HD+ tablet, the phone version of SwiftKey comes with the installation of CM 10. So should I even bother buying the tablet version of SwiftKey?

Don't you mean if you previously DID install flash from the Play Store? If not please elaborate on what exactly is "party store". Thanks.

You can't install flash through the play store if you've ever installed it on another device?
sorry, i mis-typed. yes, the play store and i meant to say that if you installed it previously from the play store, then you can install it now

People who did a full install of CM10.1 on the Nook HD+, did you first update the Nook with the B&N new firmware and then did a ROM overwrite with CM10.1? Confused if I should update the stock firmwire to the latest version first or just overwrite with CM10.1.

Also, any disadvantages with the CM10.1 over the stock firmware?

I just wanted flash to watch some network tv shows like NBC. Is there anyway to do this without rooting or installing flash?

Once I turned it on, the update already started downloading but I don't think it matters if you are just going to install CM 10 over it. Definitely make a backup of the stock firmware thru the recovery menu.

Hot deal at this price, but it lacks GPS which the Nexus 7 has. However it does have 1080p resolution for clear movie playback. TU!

Staples has it for 149 as well. Combine that with a coupon and you get it even less.

Hi. I downloaded the browser plugin from the barnes and noble store and the dolphin browser from the barnes and noble store as well. The key was setting the agent to desktop in the settings for the dolphin browser. Flash is working. Good luck
