Any concerns with this being a "black" unit vs the white one? They say it's new, just no Motorola warranty.

Also, ok if we're not advanced stream customers? Would it work with other providers?
No concern at all. I bought the same modem from Advancestream. It is working great with comcast, which updates the firmware. There are some other providers who don't update the firmware; that's where people complain abt black vs white.

I'm getting a lot of hiccups streaming and I have times where my speeds go to crap depending on the time of day.
I think your 2.4ghz band is congested. Try changing the channel on the router or it's time to upgrade to a dual band router and use the 5ghz band.

My current router has been working and I still want to upgrade.

The problem that most people have is that every home is different so something like distance from the router has a huge bearing on speeds as well as the fact that most 30-50 dollar routers are shit.

Like we are talking my Wireless G pulling a better signal strength with external antennas than some crappy wireless N. Just because it is advertised at those speeds doesn't mean it will even come close to those speeds.

If you are paying for around 20 to 30 mb internet you should be looking at routers in the 75 plus range, otherwise you are wasting money paying for service you can never fully use.
I agree each house is different so certain routers would work for one but not the other. I'm currently using 2 belkin play hd router I bought for $30 each and they work great in my situation. One is set as an AP and the other as a bridge. Personally I'd I had to upgrade I would go with an AC router for future proof purpose.

I got a N but it was only 45 bucks... I see people giving these high end routers that are 150 bucks mega thumbs up... So I'm thinking I need that now.. Ugh

Yeah no kidding, dropping a lot
get a router running Tomato / DD-WRT. ASUS RT-N16 w/ tomatoUSB = win.

I upgraded from an old MIMO G router and the difference was significant.

been renting a sb21 from TWC, it has failed twice on me in one year. I barely touch it and it's mounted properly.
TWC replaces it free.

You are paying a monthly fee for that replacement. Not free. I pay $8/month with TWC. Not no more.

That depends on several things, but most importantly your current provider speeds and what you use your connection for. For most people with a home cable internet connection of 20 Mbps or less that they use to surf the web and watch online videos and download files, a DOCSIS 2.0 modem can handle those tasks easily. For more eleaborate uses or business connections, at the higher range of current provider speeds a DOCSIS 3.0 modem would definitely make sense and allow you to maximize your connection potential. In most cases for home users, it's kind of like a car than can go 90 MPH vs one that can go 160 MPH, when the maximum speed limit is only 70 MPH or less.
I download and stream video a lot but I'm only paying for 20mbps service. I don't really have any issues with slow downs. I doubt I will be upgrading my speed any time soon.

It's 5 bucks.
I check my statements thoroughly.
I would want to jump on this, but the fear of it failing again, is holding me back.

I am currently a Brighthouse customer, and I pay $3.50 a month for my modem. The model number on the modem I am currently using is the Motorola sbg6580. Which is the better modem, is it worth buying my own? I know the one the 6121 & 6141 are both only modems and the 6580 is modem + router, but I am currently using it in bridge mode with the WD dual band router that I got a few weeks ago. Any help or suggestions would be appreciated.

Thanks all for the info in the Wiki. I just bought the 6141 a few months ago off Amazon. The seller advertised it as a new model, and I ended up buying the black one not knowing it was used. Amazon kindly is allowing me to return the product for a full refund (even though Amazon didn't sell it) and is giving me free overnight shipping on the white model, which they do sell. Awesome customer service there.

What is your VOIP phone. We talking Cisco IP communicator, Lync, etc.

Most likely it is a problem with your router. Ethernet cable wont matter because if it was your cabling it would be affecting more than just VOIP.

You can stream HD quality on a 5 mbit service for Netflix. Considering I am watching a movie one time that is good enough for me.
