I pulled the trigger...literally

41,172 2,080 June 19, 2013 at 01:09 PM in Finance
Bought my first firearm. Should pick it up at the dealer in a couple of days. Couldn't find one locally.

Springfield XDm 9mm. It felt best in my hand after shooting it, Glock 17 and 19, a Sig, and a couple of others.

It's my first gun, so don't give me a hard time about it being only a 9mm. Annoyed

I'm all about MADE IN THE USA...but why should I pay for something thats inferior(IN GENERAL NOT FIREARMS) and let them continue to make inferior products just because they are made here. Then there goes the competitive spirit that drives continuous improvement

I'd say yes, but I'm not sure, holding it in your left could be more awkward then the bad eye sight.
I'm the same as MLV with the eye issue and being right handed; I cannot shoot the AR-15 because of this; yet I'm able to handle the other rifles with scopes on them; same with the handguns with scopes.

As far as people owning 100 guns, that's not a lot laugh out loud I've photographed collections with far more than 100 in them and cataloged them for private owners; and what is in there would shock people here.

Yep & Yep, and you would not believe what else I've seen, held, touched, and swooned over.
As I take the pictures from different angles and closeups - I get to really handle the firearms and get to know them well. Serious collectors don't seem to care what they spend; and they will put the word out they are looking for a particular firearm. I need to go back to one right now to photograph 12 more firearms he recently acquired.

Tomorrow's the day I go to qualify. I take my 8 hour class on Saturday. Then get fingerprinted and wait on the paperwork (I've heard my county takes ~90 days to issue the concealed carry permit).
Went to my first gun show last weekend, out of curiosity more than anything - I spent about 30 minutes and no money there.

here's hoping you have a good instructor. the guy my wife and i had was great: it was at the most popular indoor shooting range in the area, and the instructor was the owner. they put out a 50% off Groupon for two people and sold 2,000+, so he was doing the classes six days a week. you can imagine how teaching the same 8-hour class six days a week for months at a time could be taxing, and he still had that business and a construction company to run. let's just say he drank a lot of coffee.

he covered everything he was supposed to, but since he was so bored with the material, he spent a lot of time on discussions and question/answer sessions. everyone got to ask about specific scenarios they thought they might personally encounter, and i got a much better idea of the intricacies of the law in my state than if someone had just gone up there and walked through an in-depth PowerPoint deck.

just remember: always keep the demo guns pointed in a safe direction and never put your finger in the trigger guard until you're on the range and ready to fire. Big Grin he said he's almost failed people because as soon as they stepped up for the load/unload demo, they immediately put their finger on the trigger and turned it sideways to look at it even though he just covered why they shouldn't do that.

also: our county was rumored to take 90 days as well, but we got ours in about two weeks. hope you get the same.

I'm hoping my instructor will be the same one that taught the intro course I took (in May IIRC) - he's a retired local city cop and was a firearms instructor for the PD. We went over gun safety during that class, so I'm pretty confident about that aspect.

The 90 days was as reported on online forums. The county website says 45 days after the mental health check is complete. They don't peruse the Lounge as part of this check, do they? Cold

Almost sounds like you're in New York with all that hoop jumping. And you get to pay $80 on top of it so you can exercise your constitutional right.

At least you don't need any of that to open carry.

Don't most states fingerprint and do background checks for concealed carry? Dontknow
At least NC is a "shall issue" state, so the state has the burden to provide a reason to not give me a CCW - as opposed to some states, where I guess the burden is on the applicant.

Yeah, open carry is lawful for anyone with a pistol permit (which took a week), unless prohibited by the property owner. With the new laws in NC, I'll be able to conceal carry in bars/restaurants (previously forbidden), plus keep (locked in a vehicle) a firearm on public university and many other state-owned areas (previous couldn't even take weapons on those areas).

I'll know for sure on some of this stuff in a few days, after I take my class. Smilie

Getting a weapons permit here in Puerto Rico runs close to $1000 and is a long and tedious process.

That said I love my S&W MP40
