I pulled the trigger...literally

41,172 2,080 June 19, 2013 at 01:09 PM in Finance
Bought my first firearm. Should pick it up at the dealer in a couple of days. Couldn't find one locally.

Springfield XDm 9mm. It felt best in my hand after shooting it, Glock 17 and 19, a Sig, and a couple of others.

It's my first gun, so don't give me a hard time about it being only a 9mm. Annoyed

Whee <--- anti-Podium spray

Getting a weapons permit here in Puerto Rico runs close to $1000 and is a long and tedious process.

That said I love my S&W MP40
Wow. $5 for the pistol permit (no cost, no permit required for a rifle)

Here you need a permit for any type of gun, rifle or shotgun

At least you don't need any of that to open carry.
Why don't more people open carry? I've only seen a citizen packing heat in public a handful of times (shooting ranges being the exception of course).

Various reasons. Some people don't want to carry a firearm that is big enough to hold well and has lower recoil and that carries more ammo, some people don't like to have easy access to their firearm in case of danger and would rather have to dig under their shirt or at their ankle to get to it, some people don't want a bad guy to see their gun and walk the other way and avoid the confrontation in the first place....

First I wish my state (political issues apart since Federal Laws apply here) was a shall issue and open carry state.

Dues is correct open carry keeps the criminals away mostly, I think the blame goes to the media who has made people fear guns and by proxy those who open carry them.

Here the law clearly states that anyone with a carry permit must do it concealed. No open carry is allowed and everyone who wants to carry a gun on his person must have a permit.

background: my state is open carry, shall-issue, no pistol permit required, single 8-hour course with background check and fingerprinting for concealed, carry a loaded gun in your car literally anywhere. sometimes it's nice living in the midwest.

the instructor for my CCW course knows the prosecutors of the two closest counties, and neither could find any local statute against open carry (individual municipalities can ban it). as he put it: it might be completely legal to walk around with a .44Mag on your belt, but here in the real world, you should expect a reaction from a lot of people walking down the street or in businesses who are not used to seeing other citizens openly carrying, and any policeman you see will probably ask how your day is going.

you would also have a lot of hassle with places that don't allow firearms. here, if you carry concealed into a place that has posted a No Weapons sign (basically none of which meet the state guidelines for visibility), it isn't a crime until you get caught and refuse to leave the property; if you get caught and leave peacefully, there's no crime and the police won't record it if it gets called in (rules are obviously different for specific places like federal government buildings). several friends and family members are like me and carry concealed almost everywhere with no issues, but if you open carried and walked into multiple shops around a shopping district, you'd constantly be having to conceal it or take it back to the car.

I only recall seeing one person ever open carry here in NC in 8 years: a woman in front of me in line at Lowe's about 6 months ago. I'm not counting people going in and out of shooting ranges, gun shops, etc.

So the qualifying is done. Had to take 40 shots at various intervals. Instructor would have me either lay my weapon down or have it in a low ready position and then tell me to fire 4 shots in 7 seconds, or 1 shot in 2 seconds, or 2 shots in 6 seconds, etc...stuff like that. Just had to hit anywhere in the silhouette on the target to get 100%. 2 shots were one-handed, 2 were from the hip, none were non-dominant (I hadn't practiced any of those). Class all day Saturday. Ok I was wondering about getting 100%. I hate the 21 yard shots I usually miss those.
Here we do 6 consecutive at 1 yard with our off hand, 3 at 3 yards with offhand and 3 one hand strong side at 3 yards. 12 at 7 yards, 12 at 10 yards, 10 at 15 yards and 6 at 21 yards.
For a total of 50, pass grade is 38 if I am not mistaken. You get tested twice in a row and must pass both times.

Also the police siren wailing and people yelling does not help.

I don't know what % you have to get to pass here in NC...getting 100% at 3, 5 and 7 yards isn't too hard. Smilie
I haven't ever practiced at longer distances, one handed, weak hand, or point shooting...all that is next. I think my local range is only 50' or so long, so I don't think I'll be able to practice at 21 yards or even close to that.

Nice gun. I picked up a used Sig P6 back at the height of "Obama's gonna tik `er guns" craze in 09. Paid $450 used back then. So expensive... got the CCP too. Which reminds me, some folks need to better understand what "concealed" means. I was at Publix the other day, and some dude was in there just displaying his gun on his belt for all to see. It was strange and unnerving, even for someone like myself who isn't afraid of guns.

Might want to practice removing the gun from under your skirt quickly and taking shots at a target, more of a real life situation.

What state? It might be an open carry making such a scene legal like we were talking about above.
