what's the deal with the "billionaire predicts financial collapse" advertising news links?
Quite often I'll be reading an article on CNN or some other site, and there'll be a pseudo advertising link to some article with headlines like "billionaire predicts financial ruin" or some crap like that.
its "newsmax" ad paid garbage. They are a so called news organization that leans so far to the right, they fall over. It makes Fox news seem like a reputable news source. I just had to laugh at that when I saw that and the stock market kept on roaring to new highs.
They are playing to people's emotions. Its all a moneymaking scheme. These ads have been especially effective in recent years because of polarization in the country (and the more effective they are, the more you will see). Many conservative commentators/economists believe current economic/monetary policies are unsustainable and will cause problems down the road (Actually, the deficit was just as unsustainable under GWB, but I wont get into that). In addition to this, many others are jumping on the bandwagon, taking advantage of fear, for monetary gain. It is easy to take someone's already negative opinion of the president, and the economy, and push a little further to make them think we are moments or months away from an economic armageddon. The same kind of talk happened under FDR, but circumstances were different. Public opinion was more supportive of FDR in his time, FDR was arguably a more effective president (result of always having a large majority in both houses), and there wasnt the same type of technology in place (ie internet) that allowed for widespread advertising of crackpot theories. Therefore, at the time, this talk was more muted.
