How can you put together a stand like the one found on the VG248QE? Are there some things you can get at Home Depot or Lowe's?

Do you mean that you want to fabricate one from scratch?

A phone book or 2 phone books. Aside from that, buying one is the option.

When monoprice sells them so cheap, why bother with trying to cobble something together?

It depends.
If he wants to make a redneck style stand, it may be cheaper. OMG

I have this Triple Monitor Stand for my eyefinity set up: http://www.tykesupply.com/Triple_...d_Arm.html

It's been working great for a year now. Single monitors stands available too: http://www.tykesupply.com/Product...tands.html
http://shop.easymountlcd.com/ (pretty much offer the same products - ordered one part from here)

Some DIY guides: http://techreport.com/forums/view...37&t=70862

You can search the HardOCP forums for more.
