Yeah, we booked it last fall. Price dropped $1,000 since then, so we have a huge credit to use on the ship.
can you not get a refund?

Why should it drop? Nothing happened to you or any other passengers, just a bad experience on another ship.

As far as why I got the credit, I booked a fare that allows for credits if the fare drops - fares go up and down all the time for all ships. Rates dropped about 12 times over the past several months, so the $1k was the total for all drops. It started going back up several weeks ago; the last price drop was in May.

It's technically nonrefundable credit. But I've heard they've been refunding people that don't use it. Even if they don't, there are tricks to get it in cash (basically, charge money to your onboard account at a casino slot machine, play one spin, then cash out).

High Five Ohh, I've never been to the spa on a cruise ship, that would be a nice chunk of money to use for the spa!

Then again, drinks can be pricey, so $1k for drinks would be awesome too!! Woot
Though if you plan any excursions through the cruise line, you could probably use up that $1k pretty quick. Scratchchin
We'll have a couple bottles in the cabin, so we won't spend too much on drinks onboard. Our typical bar bill is $500-$800 for a week, but should be $200 or less since I'll be making my own drinks.

Leaves Saturday; Nassau on Sunday. St. Thomas on Tuesday (we're taking the ferry to St. John). St. Maarten on Wednesday. Back next Saturday.

No but a lack of demand related to such concerss causes ticket prices to fall, and most lines offer some manner of price protection in the event of a price change between purchase and trip(given that in many cases one could simply cancel and re-reserve with no cost or a nominal cancellation fee)...

This.

Our deposit was nonrefundable - we would have lost $750 if we had cancelled even one day after booking last fall. That was the gamble we took for the chance of price drops. I booked before the issue with Carnival Triumph.

Ohmy Usually I don't really spend anything on drinks during a cruise. I think I've only ever had one drink that I had to pay for Down Then again, I've only gone on cruises with my parents and sister in the past, haven't been on one yet with my fiance.

No need to, it's easy to get bottles on board.

We'll still buy a few drinks, like during a show, or in the casino.
I thought about the drink package Carnival now offers, but that's $57 per day per person, and wife and I would both have to purchase it if one of us wanted it. Couldn't make the numbers work, though it would have been nice to know exactly how much we would spend on booze - we would still have had more credit left over. I could drink enough to make it worthwhile for me, but my wife won't.
