One thing that bothers me here is the 5400RPM drives. The step up to the 1TB Hybrid drive is a whooping $120. That's a bad value.
Totally agree. This is exactly the machine that I'm looking for, and I've already got a SanDisk SSD ready to install. Except the P50 doesn't make it easy to replace the hdd. Has anyone actually disassembled a P50? I'd hate to have to pull the keyboard and whatever off a brand new machine.

Thanks OP. I bit. The laptop comes with a 1080p screen which is must have for me and a backlit keyboard, which is almost a must have. The battery life should be good with the 4th gen. Core i5 processor. I upgraded to a Blu-Ray burner and an 802.11ac wireless card - which I am seeing for the first time as an option on a laptop. I have an 802.11ac router, so it was a very appealing option.

The only negative - and I am still not happy about it - is the hard drive selection: They are all 5400RPM drives and are noticeably slower than 7200RPM drives. I would want the 1TB Hybrid drive, but it's not a good value at an extra $120. At the end, the screen, the BluRay drive, the 802.11ac adapter and (to a lesser degree) the backlit keyboard and the 4th gen Core CPU with its better graphics and battery life made it hard to resist.

My config came out to $590 before tax. Crazy good value/deal. I could have saved another $15 for sticking to a Blu-Ray player instead of getting the Blu-Ray burner, but I think I can afford to "splurge" here. Big Grin

This is what I suggest:

Option 1: $575
  • Base config
  • Upgrade to Blu-Ray Player +$50
  • Upgrade to Wireless AC +$35
  • Use the $60 off coupon SAVE600
  • Use the $50 off coupon CHT7SPQ

Option 2: $590
  • Base config
  • Upgrade to Blu-Ray Burner +$75
  • Upgrade to Wireless AC +$35
  • Use the $70 off coupon RETAILMENOT700
  • Use the $50 off coupon CHT7SPQ

Option 3: $595
  • Base config
  • Upgrade to Blu-Ray Player +$50
  • Upgrade to 750GB Hard drive + $30
  • Upgrade to Wireless AC +$35
  • Use the $70 off coupon RETAILMENOT700
  • Use the $50 off coupon CHT7SPQ

EDIT: Did anyone else notice that they calculate the sales tax in a weird way?

Just pulled the trigger on this one. I've been looking for a laptop for about two weeks now. The 1080p display at this price is what pushed me over the edge.

For what it is worth, I couldn't get the $515 configuration that OP lists. The base model is $599.99 so the SAVE600 coupon doesn't work.

[Edit: Nevermind, OP upgraded the wifi instead of the RAM. That works too.]

What I did was upgrade the RAM to 2GB+2GB for $10 (same 4GB as the base configuration, but the hardware will interleave access to RAM and run faster... drawback is that you proably have to ditch at least one stick of RAM to upgrade).

That gave me a system priced at 609.99

Then I could apply CHT7SPQ ($50) and SAVE600 ($60) for a final price of $499.99

Toshiba charged me sales tax based on the price before the $60 discount and taxed me on the $29.99 shipping charge which was also free. I'm going to call tomorrow and complain about that. Basically I paid sales tax on an extra $90.

Final cost for skullcandy headphones and base P50 (with 2GB+2GB upgrade): $499.99 + tax

Wish me luck in tearing apart my brand new laptop to install an SSD drive.

I can only get it down to $560 trying to follow what you did. When was the SAVE600 applied? I'm not seeing that reflected.

EDIT: Wow this is confusing. I see that it's applied at the end, including with 15 other numbers and like you said, tax on it all.

Nice, great Haswell processor options. Just got to get rid of that crap 5400 RPM HDD and replace with a SSD and then it's a sweeter choice! +1

I'd note that this might not be a good laptop model if you want to upgrade the hard drive. Neither the battery not the hard drive are able to be replaced by the user on the newer Toshiba P and S series laptops. I'd ask a customer service representative about the specific model you're buying.

Man, I just pulled the trigger on this, then remembered to check the battery stats. 4-cell, non-removable. Anyone think Haswell and an LED screen are enough to keep this afloat for college notetaking?

Probably going to end up cancelling this order... :|

Can we got some more clarification on if it is possible to change the Battery / Hard Drive? (for the more "advanced" users.)

For one class it should be more than enough. For more than one class, you might want to consider charging it somewhere in between classes or find an outlet in class.

This is an excellent question. I tried looking at the pics online and it does not look like it is easily accessible. I could be wrong though, I am looking for anyone who has experience with this laptop to pull the trigger.
