Newegg has the MOTOROLA SB6141 SURFboard DOCSIS 3.0 Cable Modem [newegg.com] on sale for $86.99 (you must checkout to see the price).

Use coupon code WALLET to take $15 off. The only catch is that you must pay using Google Wallet which means you have to buy it through the mobile website or app.

Shipping is free (Super Eggsaver). It's ShopRunner eligible but unfortunately you can't use that from the mobile site/app.

Final price: $71.99

This is around the same price as past FP deals that required a rebate.

I got the black model from Modems Modems on ebay for $54 shipped and it is one of the best purchases I have ever made. I am finally getting the speed that I am paying for. Setup with Time Warner was flawless. A chat session with CS and modem was up and running in 20 minutes. I had no issues of TWC not being able to upgrade the firmware like some people are discussing here.

Another reason to get the white one - it comes with newer firmware (reports online, my experience). This is important because TWC rarely (never?) updates the firmware on dedicated modems like the SB6141, there is an issue with the oldest revision that the black modems come with. Black typically has 1.0.6.3 on it, all of the white ones I've purchased have 1.0.6.8 - I've bought five so far on behalf of relatives so they can stop paying the rental fee. Plus I like having the warranty. Thread about the firmware concerns:

I just bought it this morning, maybe I'll try calling newegg tomorrow to see if I can get $15 back.
I had this same issue, except I bought it a couple days ago (still in transit; set to arrive on Saturday). I was told I had to reorder and refuse delivery on the first one. Asked two different reps, same answer. I called Fedex, they couldn't cancel/reroute because it was sent Fedex Smartpost.

One rep said if I wasn't able to intercept & refuse delivery, to call them back and I'd get a free return label for the first one. Kinda skeptical about the free part, but I've never done a newegg return.

I got TWC RR standard internet.
Standard is 15Mbps / 1Mbps - so either way, you are getting above the speeds you are paying for. If the channel bonding that the SB6141 is capable of does nothing for you because you are not on a congested node, you could consider trying to buy an SB5101U to avoid the monthly rental fee.

Fire up http://192.168.100.1/ (web interface for the modem) and click on the Signal tab up top. If you have multiple downstream/upstream channels listed, you are using channel bonding. The benefit is splitting your bandwidth among multiple channels, so if one or more are in heavy use by other customers, you can send a little traffic on each channel and still get your aggregate advertised bandwidth.

Awesome modem for sure. I didn't realize it was such a deal at this price; I just bought one last week from Amazon for $70.

From doing a speedtest.net test, this new modem has doubled my speed at home from roughly 55D/22U to 122D/40U. So, I am definitely pleased with this.

Does this modem have all I need for internet service from TWC?

What makes it better than cheaper modems/routers? Do I need a modem and a router, are the the same thing?

Lots of questions I know, but I'll be living on my own in a month and need to figure out what our household will need.
This is just a modem. It takes the signal from your ISP and decodes it for you to use. It only has one ethernet output, so you will likely want to buy a router as well, so you can connect more devices and have wireless.

They do make modem/router combinations, but they are more expensive and usually don't have all the features of a stand alone router.

I'd say there are two main benefits of buying this:
-Not having to pay the modem rental fee. Time Warner's fee here is $5/mo so this pays for itself after 14 months (or less if they continue to up the fee)
-This modem is usually much better than the ones provided by your ISP. Fast and reliable, just read all the reviews.

Great modem. Infinitely better than the ubee crap that Time Warner is giving out now.

Had tons of issues with the ubee MTA - dropped connections 4 or 5 times a day, and came configured as a gateway modem instead of a "regular" modem. Royally screwed up accessing my home servers from the outside world.

Bought the SB6141, acts as a REAL modem (not a gateway), no dropped connections in over a month, and consistent down/up speeds (above my tier).

Highly recommended.
Same experience here! The ubee that TWC RR charged me rent was dropping once every day or so. My SB6141 did not drop for 35 days straith since was last plugged in! And the speed is always the max for my plan. With the ubee the speed was fluctuating.

My experience shows otherwise. I got the black version a while ago with hardware version 7. I'm getting the TWC updates and currently my modem is running on firmware SB_KOMODO-1.0.6.12-SCM00-NOSH

Would this be the same for Comcast / Xfinity? I currently lease a rca dhg535-2 from them and have triple play, so I can replace that with this and still have my digital phone service work? It's on the approved devices list http://mydeviceinfo.comcast.net/ Just confused about the triple play.
