*For Discover Card Member Only*

Received two flyers from Discover today. Both of them indicate Discover bank is giving $50 to new customers who open a Discover Cashback Checking. I am not sure if this offer is exclusive, but there is no invitation code given.

Two links get from the flyers:

DiscoverBank.com/RewardsAreIn50 [DiscoverBank.com]
DiscoverBank.com/GetMoreFree50 [DiscoverBank.com]

Highlights of this new checking account:

FREE ATMs
FREE checks
No monthly fees
No minimum balance

Earn rewards:
10¢ on debit card purchase
10¢ on online bill pay
10¢ on checks written

It says you get 10 cents per debit card purchase and bill payment. For small purchases, could be a good replacement for Chase Exclusives which is ending soon?

I think it is going to be very nice... For any purchase under $10 this is better than a 1% card.

I got some flyer from them last week about a checking account, but didn't read it. I'm assuming it also offered me $50.

I usually throw out their offers without looking. I emailed them to see if I qualify. Anyone know if they do any type of credit check to open this account?

Stupid site requires you to transfer in at least $25 at a time.(Not talking about the initial $25 minimum)

And their transfers are slow. They "sit" on the money a few days no matter if you push or pull.

But, Ive made 20 cents on 2 Aldi purchases where for years I didnt get anything back. (They ONLY accept debit cards)

Anyone get a response from Discover Card about whether we quality if the link in the OP's post mentions "bonus"? It does mention the word "bonus"(after logging in) at the sign up, but does not mention $50

I HATE when these companies make you call!

Thank you for your recent message regarding a Discover checking account promotion. Through your Discover Card Account Center we manage your credit card only. I wish to refer you to a Banking Specialist for further assistance. Please call Discover Bank at 1-800-347-7000 at your earliest convenience. If you are a current Discover Bank Customer, you can register online at DiscoverBank.com [discoverbank.com]. Once registered, you will be able to contact us via secure email.

I can tell you what they will say, unless you got an email, you wont be guaranteed the $50.

But, another poster got his $50 and he didnt get an email.

My understanding is they are going to do a national rollout after they work the kinks out. The $50 will probably be clear by then. If I hadnt already opened an account, Id wait. But, Im still crossing my fingers I get the $50 anyway. And I might.

Clicked link, clicked the open account button on the page, logged in, saw the "special bonus" message at the top, applied, had to call in to verify address, verified with the rep that I'd get $50. He said from July 31st, within 4-6 weeks I will get $50. Only requirement is that my initial opening deposit goes through, no direct deposit requirement, etc. No fees either.

Thumbs up and repped, OP. Easiest $50 I've ever made.

Edit: just signed my fiance up for one too, didn't have to call, auto approved. +$50!

Thanks! Signed up for both me and wife. $50 x 2 = $100 easy and will try to maximize on earning rewards with this also. As long as no monthly fee minimum Bal. requirement, all is good. -Smilie

I emailed them asking whether opening a new checking account involves a hard credit inquiry, and this is what they wrote in reply:

Good Afternoon,

Thank you for contacting me about applying for a Discover® Checking account. I appreciate your interest in Discover, and I am happy to help you today!

I believe a hard inquiry would be requested. Generally anytime your apply for a new financial account the reports are requested. It is a Federal Regulation that we review those files to consider any other debt obligations you may have before making a final decision.

If you prefer, you may contact our 24-hour Customer Service at 1-800-DISCOVER (1-800-347-2683) to apply by phone or request a mailed application.

I appreciate you taking the time to contact me today about applying for a Discover® Checking account. Thank you for choosing Discover.

Sincerely,

IMO - $50 or a new checking a/c is not worth a hard credit inquiry.
Thanks for contacting them. I think ING Direct back in the day also did a hard pull for opening an online checking so I'm not surprised. Not worth the inquiry on my credit report

Its laughable that someone would pass up a good chance at $50, plus ongoing 10 cent rewards because it might ding your credit score 3 points.

And they did NOT do a hard pull when I opened my account. Perhaps because I already have a discovercard with them. Maybe they would for a brand new customer ?

I looked into opening an account but didn't see anything about the bonus. The cashback bonus might be useful. For me on a given month I probably have like 5 bills to pay and could easily do 10-15 debit transactions. Its not much but it would add up.
