*For Discover Card Member Only*

Received two flyers from Discover today. Both of them indicate Discover bank is giving $50 to new customers who open a Discover Cashback Checking. I am not sure if this offer is exclusive, but there is no invitation code given.

Two links get from the flyers:

DiscoverBank.com/RewardsAreIn50 [DiscoverBank.com]
DiscoverBank.com/GetMoreFree50 [DiscoverBank.com]

Highlights of this new checking account:

FREE ATMs
FREE checks
No monthly fees
No minimum balance

Earn rewards:
10¢ on debit card purchase
10¢ on online bill pay
10¢ on checks written
If you purchase something through a post on our site, Slickdeals may get a small share of the sale.

I opened my account before I knew about any $50 bonus. I hope & expect I will still get the $50 however, I fully expect this to go "national" eventually with everyone getting the $50. So If I hadnt already opened mine, I would wait for some kind of "offical" invitation or something.
Simply because $50 is more than 4 years worth of 10 cent at a time cashback transactions.

Its a good deal just on 10-12 10 cent cashbacks per month alone. (Im only going to use it for small transactions and at Aldi where they dont accept any kind of credit cards, debit only)

The link doesn't indicate any $50 bonus offer. However, if you are eligible for this offer, you may see this note on the top of the page once you log in to Discover from that link.

"A special offer just for new Discover checking customers... Get an account opening bonus when you open a Discover Cashback CheckingSM Account."

Clicked link, clicked the open account button on the page, logged in, saw the "special bonus" message at the top, applied, had to call in to verify address, verified with the rep that I'd get $50. He said from July 31st, within 4-6 weeks I will get $50. Only requirement is that my initial opening deposit goes through, no direct deposit requirement, etc. No fees either.

Thumbs up and repped, OP. Easiest $50 I've ever made.

Edit: just signed my fiance up for one too, didn't have to call, auto approved. +$50!

Just talked to the lady from Discover Bank, after you log into your account (credit card) if you see "NEW! Cashback Checking - no monthly fees " under your credit card line then you were invited to this new debit card they are giving and will get the $50.

Got a flyer via snail mail last week....opened the account with 25$ min....free 50$ plus a few movies at Redbox.....Winning!

I think this is targeted....not every Discover card member is eligible. It may have something to do with having a Discover savings account...which I do.

I emailed them asking whether opening a new checking account involves a hard credit inquiry, and this is what they wrote in reply:

Good Afternoon,

Thank you for contacting me about applying for a Discover® Checking account. I appreciate your interest in Discover, and I am happy to help you today!

I believe a hard inquiry would be requested. Generally anytime your apply for a new financial account the reports are requested. It is a Federal Regulation that we review those files to consider any other debt obligations you may have before making a final decision.

If you prefer, you may contact our 24-hour Customer Service at 1-800-DISCOVER (1-800-347-2683) to apply by phone or request a mailed application.

I appreciate you taking the time to contact me today about applying for a Discover® Checking account. Thank you for choosing Discover.

Sincerely,

IMO - $50 or a new checking a/c is not worth a hard credit inquiry.

When i opened my account a few weeks ago, I thought I got an error too.

And never got an email confirm but the next time i went to discover, I realized it had indeed opened.

I suspect the reason its targeted is so they can work the bugs out.

Logged in to discover, but OP's link didn't indicate any $50 bonus. Sent an email to see if my account is eligible to receive the bonus. Will update if they say I'd be able to get it.

Except that, as others have mentioned, there's no inquiry.

Happened to me as well. Then two days later when I logged into my Discover credit card account, sitting there, pretty as you please was this checking account.

lol, forgot to hide the 4-digit ending.

When I logged in, I couldn't see anywhere mentioned $50 bonus as well. However, in the top of the page, it shows "A special offer just for new Discover checking customers... Get an account opening bonus when you open a Discover Cashback CheckingSM Account." I guess you are eligible for the bonus if you can see it. FYI
Seen that note and applied online. Got the account with routing 031100649 just with a few clicks. Only asked to type was the funding source acc. # for electronic transfer (their the only option) and SSN. Very easy - resembles orange checking a few years ago.

Can almost guarantee they will say "no". But you might get the $50 anyway.

To be safe, wait for the email invitation.

Someone who actually has the flyer, are there terms for the $50 bonus other than opening the account? Does it give any kind of time frame. The page didn't say specifically what the bonus was only that one was available. It let me open the account with no problem, only a $25 balance.

Just did this. I did not receive a flyer but clicked through the link and logged in. Part of the disclosures was this:

Offer not available to current checking customers or those whose checking accounts were closed in past 90 days. Account must be opened and funded between 6/24/13-7/31/13. Offer is non-transferable and only for addressee. Limit 1 per customer. Bonus will be issued within 4-6 weeks of 7/31/13 as a credit to your account, which must be open when issued. Bonus is considered interest and will be reported on IRS Form 1099-INT. Offer may be withdrawn without notice.
