The Royal Road to Card Magic by Jean Hugard and Frederick Braue is probably the single most often recommended book on card magic for beginners. It is an absolute classic and can take you quickly and effectively from the very basics all the way to a finished expert.

Hugard and Braue have organized the book by starting with the tools that you need at each chapter and then teaching you a number of effects you can do considering the tools you will have learned. It is a strategy that has proven very effective and allows the student to immediately get the satisfaction of performing some excellent effects right away. Here are some of the things you will learn:

The Overhand Shuffle
Riffle Shuffle
Flourishes
The Glide
The Glimpse
The Key Card
The Palm
The Backslip
False Shuffles and Cuts
The Double Lift and Turnover
The Pass
Miscellaneous Card Flourishes
The Reverses
The Hindu Shuffle and Other Controls
The Classic Force

Thanks and repped.

You get special kudos for providing a direct download link! Thank you for that!

I downloaded it, and noticed that it appears to be a photocopied version of the original book... and a really GOOD copy at that! I am impressed. No crooked pages, no fuzzy letters. It is really good.

It was written in 1947, so I assume this book is now in the public domain? I am not sure how all of that works.

It looks really good and has sketches of how to do things with the cards. All in all, this looks worth downloading and worth giving a few of these tricks a try! I might try to impress my niece and nephew this Christmas when I visit them.

Awesome. I used to practice card magic all the time - I can still do a few, though rusty.. double lift and turnover is dead simple once you get it down, blows them away every time.

Could never get forces right, though..
