Canceling & Signing back up as New member of Direct TV?

BradleyR5741 8 10 August 28, 2013 at 06:09 PM
We just canceled our Direct TV a couple of days ago. Our bill was close to $100. D-TV doesn't seem to care about loyal fans, they offered us a discount or the genie (which New customers get both for a lot less than they'd give us).

Can we sign up as New customers (under wife's name)? Will that work & could we get in trouble? Also, we still have the old equipment (haven't gotten the boxes from them to send it back). Do we need to wait to try and sign back up (I prefer them over Dish and football is about to start)?

So has anyone actually canceled and signed back up right away with D-TV as a new customer? Will that work, even though it's the same address?

Edit: you may want to check out this thread.

I know someone who did the same thing. Husband cancels the service then have the wife start new service and repeat it. They waited until they returned the equipment though. Also, if you can wait long enough, Directv may actually contact you and offer new contract pricing to come back. That's what happened for one of my friend.

I've heard from others that within a day or two after they canceled Direct, they contacted them with a better offer. But now it has been 3 nites since and I don't think they are going to call us. (Not sure if I should try signing up as a new customer, tell them my wife canceled and I want to start back up, or just switch to Dish. Too bad a loyal customer can't get the same treatment that people get who aren't subscribers.)

Also, when I got married and moved in with my wife 3 years ago I canceled it (she had Dish at the time but we switched a few months later). They called me after I quit even though I told them I had told them I wouldn't be signing up for TV since she already had it.

- So you think I should just wait for now? I want to sign up soon with football starting though. (Could I get in trouble if I try to sign up new under her name?).

As a former seller of both Dish and DTV, my suggestion is that you just accept the fact that you'll be switching providers every two years. (Dish/DTV) It's not really a bad thing, as you'll always get the newest equipment and best rates. And if you do stick with DTV, definitely should have the old equipment gone before they come to install the new stuff or there could be a hiccup.

Does your wife have your last name? I'm on my 4th 2 yr contract doing what you mentioned.
1) I signed up, waited 2 years and cancelled
2) Fiance called up and signed up, waited 2 years and cancelled
3) I signed up, waited 2 years and cancelled
4) Wife called up and signed up, and will cancel later this year
5) I'll probably go for Dish this next time around though. The Hopper looks amazing with it's integrated Sling adapter and ability to transfer shows to an iPad. Very helpful when traveling!

We just gave them her maiden name and it went through fine. If it's the same last name it may be a little suspect but what are they going to do? Send the DTV police after you?

The only reason I even started doing this was because when I originally signed up I didn't have a HDTV so I just had a regular DVR. When I got a HDTV they wanted me to pay $300 or $400 for a HD-DVR while new customers got it for free and all the other discounts. They wouldn't budge at all. Needless to say it wasn't a hard decision...

Does not seem like your idea would work cause it is obviously the same address. Plus, aren't the new customer offers "per household"? Besides, if it did work, sd'ers would have jumped all over it by now, lol.
I also called to "cancel" (for a better deal) and the rep called my bluff and said "fine, what date do you want"? So I set up the cancel and ended up calling up a couple of days before the date and this time was able to negotiate some freebies like the nfl season for free and $100 gift card plus bill reduction. I don't think directv will call you with a better offer, you will have to call them.

Livnin,

My wife signed up before she had her name changed. So it is under her old last name. (Although I was the one that called and canceled it.)

It is the same address that we just canceled from, so you don't think we will get in trouble if I call up now and sign back up as a New customer? Do we need to wait until we send back the DVR & Equip (haven't gotten the return box yet)?

- Anything else we need to know?

If it's under her old last name I would just leave it where it is (although I would have had her cancel but that's too late). I'd send your equipment back and then have you call in to order new service. This assumes she paid the bill before. If you used your CCard to pay the bill (on an account that was in her name) that could be a bit of a red flag.

I mean for all they know you're her new roommate as you have different names. Or atleast that's what I have been going off of for nearly 8 years Big Grin

I used to work for DirecTV, doing sales so I will share you with some issues that come up. If it's the same last name, at the same address, there will be an alert thrown when the credit check is done. Since you need to not be a DirecTV customer for 2 years to be considered a "new customer". If that happens, you will then be transfered to the winback department, who will have different offers for you.

We got the box to send back the equipment. Should we go ahead & send it back now?

My wife mentioned we could try calling back first, and ask them if they will give us a better offer before we talk to Dish (to get new equipment & better price than before), since they never called back and the guy we talked to was kind of rude. I don't think they will give us a much better deal, and could that hurt things if we are going to try and have me sign up as a new member?

The only thing is I don't have my own credit card (just a debut card, will that work?). So the D-TV was under her old last name and her credit card.

Any last thoughts on what to do?

So should my wife try to call back & see if they will give us a deal like New customers (Price & Genie)?

Or should we just go ahead send back the old stuff tomorrow & have me call and try to sign up New (hoping that works)?
