New tire got chipped on sidewall. Should I replace?

1,519 272 September 9, 2013 at 05:24 PM
So my GF got all 4 tires installed last month.Due to 1 hr of sleep and all day at Disneyland, she ran the curb while getting into a parking. The curb chipped a quarter size of rubber out of the sidewall. A tiny bit of tire thread (2mm diameter) is showing. Should we replace the tire? She does about 50 miles of freeway driving a week. Casual driving, not spirited.

Absolutely replace the tire. That is unsafe to drive on.

Edit: I don't know if she got any road hazard coverage with the tires or not but you may get it replaced with little pro-rating if its covered. Just don't say she ran over a curb. You don't know how this happened.

It's not like I'm a tire expert, but if I had a chip anywhere on the tire, where I could see the thread. I would definitely replace the tire.
There is an alternative that would make it a lot more secure, although I can't say if it would be 100%, and that's to install an inner tube.
I've done the same myself, peeved that the tire was almost new and it got bubbled, like the size of half a golf ball, so I felt confident enough with the tube to feel safe, and I do drive a bit fast, but I hesitate to tell anyone that it's a sure thing.

I'm not suggesting that you go with an inner tube, but that's what I would do.
Perhaps I'm not as wise and cautious as most.

Worse than I thought. See she scrapped up the rim pretty good too.

That tire is no longer stable.
There is nothing to think about. Replace it.

Just make sure you train her on what to do if that happens. Saw some idiot blow a tire and slam on the breaks, car goes careening across two lanes before the numbnuts ends up in the side of the road facing the wrong direction.

Replace it! I am betting if you take it back to the tire shop they will prorate out the damage on a new one.

Obligatory woman driver comment. I don't know how many miles are on those tires, but at one moth a new one might be a close enough of a match with respect to tread wear as well.

Some tire manufactures have road hazard for the first 12 months or 2/32 of use. Look up the brand and see. Also if purchased with a credit card it MAY be covered for 90 days or so.

It should be free to get a new one if you bought the guarantee that covers this.
