Thread Details

For the techies on the site----

http://www.cloudatcost.com

If you are willing to take a chance on a start-up company; for the next 7000 or so virtual Linux servers created, CloudAtCost is allowing the charter members of their hosting service to set up a Linux "cloud-based" server for a one-time fee as low as $35 (they will take Paypal).

For the $35 server, you get a CentOS, Debian, or Ubuntu server with:
1 Xeon vCPU, 1 Public IP, 512MB RAM, 10GB SSD, 100Mbit Internet with 500GB of monthly transfer. They do have pay-by-the year plans. Also, they have two other packages that basically double, then double again these specs. (for $70 and $140 one-time cost.) They have even bigger discounts if you buy 10 pack or more "servers." They provide vlan support between then, thus I assume you could do load balancing and clustering.

About Us

We are a new Cloud company that does things differently. We are partnered with Fibernetics, a national carrier and ISP in Canada. We leverage our own data centers across the country, and our own national network to bring you the best cloud services at the best rates anywhere.

About Fibernetics

Over the last ten years, Fibernetics has emerged as one of Canada's fastest growing and largest telecommunications companies. Fibernetics is an operating Competitive Local Exchange Carrier (CLEC) regulated by the CRTC, that has direct connectivity into the heart of the incumbents fiberoptic networks across Canada.
Since this is the price of a few months of my current Linux virtual server's service, I have decided to take a chance on their offering. This is the same company that seems to be doing well with freephoneline.ca . Even if they only last a few months, I have already paused my service (and billing) at my current hosting company, rerouted my DNS pointers, thus I will not be out anything more. I expect growing pains, but I use my online servers as toys/for development anyway.
If you purchase something through a post on our site, Slickdeals may get a small share of the sale.

1gbit network is here

Please be careful on signing up - when the coupon didn't work, we abandoned the cart, and checkout, however - CloudAtCost sent us an invoice, for a product we didn't sign up - shaady!!

Request please - can one you Linux gurus, please add to some help on this wiki - how to setup a wordpress serving site. I can navigate Linux around cmd line, but thats it, and would like to have some help on getting this VPS to multiple wordpress hosting ready site - with a free version of CPANEL, (and delete this comment, when done). A script to pull stuff down and install would be even great.

https://library.linode.com

freeserver.us offer WordPress VPS, ready to go. you can find coupon @freeserverus and get it for $2.99/yr or $7.79/3-yr

---------------------------------------------------
I am using the setup below and it beats CPANEL setup big time:

- tuxlite (easy install of MYSQL PHP APACHE/NGINX and a lot more goodies) - download at tuxlite.com
- webmin for managing everything, best web based GUI for LINUX admins.

I used to love Cpanel, and the setup above helped me make a smooth transition from cpanel. Hope this helps.

I have a developer2 and am running Ununtu 12.04 using free-nx with unity2d. Pretty good so far. Install took about 3Gb (went from 1.4Gb used to 4.3Gb used).

sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install ubuntu-desktop gnome
# choose gdm if prompted
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:freenx-team
sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get install freenx
sudo /usr/lib/nx/nxsetup --install

Quote from gxfu View Post :
As of July 2011, the FreeNX PPA package is missing the nxsetup script. The script can be downloaded from here by issuing:
wget https://bugs.launchpad.net/freenx...tup.tar.gz
Code:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/freenx-server/+bug/576359/+attachment/1378450/+files/nxsetup.tar.gz
Unpack the nxsetup script:

tar -xvf nxsetup.tar.gz
Copy the setup script to /usr/lib/nx:

sudo cp nxsetup /usr/lib/nx/nxsetup

# sudo vim /etc/nxserver/node.conf
# uncomment COMMAND_START_GNOME='gnome-session --session ubuntu-2d'
# uncomment/modify DISPLAY_BASE=1001

sudo /etc/init.d/freenx-server restart

Then connected from win7 using Nomachine NX Client. Works good. You might not need to changethe DISPLAY_BASE but it wont hurt.

-PG (sleep time now :-) )

Take a look at crtmpserver: http://www.rtmpd.com/ which will run under Ubuntu and others.

If you are talking about freephonline, they have been in service for a few years.

It is a Canadan servce. In an echo of this hosting offer, one part of it you can pay a one time free of $50 to get an "unlocked" configuration file to get free phone service via your own device(ATA). In this case it would be like Ooma, but using your own device for the service (Like the Obi) with little technical support from them.
Here are some chat about the service:

i hate to thread crap but...
the thing about these hosts is, they're stable for a few months. that's about all you get.

i have spotvps for a while, they've been dam stable for like 6 months after that their network is congested...

even at $35 for 6 month, there's better offers out there if you watch lowendbox.com

and you might want to put that this is an OpenVZ server(the most oversold kind) lol

Not as much as you think. We are heading to an age where its information and its access that has value. (Just think Google/Facebook, etc.) The delivery method is just a commodity.

You are not thread crapping, but providing input and more data points to make us better informed consumers.
(This is one of the reasons I use SD, but I will admit there is a lot more chafe than wheat at times.)

I am aware of some of the gotchas, but thank you for bringing them up. For example, Digital Ocean will halt the creation of new "droplets" at times. (It took me 6 hours to power off a host once there. (But they gave me a nice credit for my trouble.)

For me, using Cloudatcost hosting has some extra value for me since they do not currently have a US data center as for as I know. (My server traces to Waterloo Canada.)

Here is what they say:

Quote from CloudAtCost :
How can you do this for this price? We've already built and own the infrastructure, we don't have the same cost model as our competitors. Our space, power and internet costs are far lower, and we pass the savings on to you.

How am I billed? For our initial launch promotion, you will be billed $35 when you sign up. That's it! No monthly or yearly costs after that.
