What Straight Talk phones can send/receive Group Texts?

325 59 December 3, 2013 at 07:03 PM
We have been generally pretty satisfied with Straight Talk with the exception of group texting. My Nokia e71 was able to send a group text (to 3 friends), but it was not threaded in one place and when one friend replied to the group, it was received on a separate thread. We needed something better, plus the Nokia was a very limited "smartphone" and the battery was on its way out.

We tried to upgrade to a ST LG Optimus Logic and then a ST Samsung Galaxy Centura, but group texting was non-existent on either phone. When we tried to send a group text to the 3 friends, it would send them each an individual message, so it looked like a one on one text. I tried to get this resolved with a Chat with a ST rep; here is how it went:

ST- Please be informed that "group texting" is a phone specific ability which means only those phones capable of this application can enjoy it.
Me- can you please tell me what phones have that specific ability?
ST- We do not guarantee that group texting will work in all Straight Talk phones. We do not have information as to what phones are capable of that specific ability. This is just a matter of trial and error.
Me- ok, but do you have a list of what phone are known to allow for group texting?
ST- No, we don't have that list of phones.
Me- So, if I wanted to have group texting abilities, how will I know what straight talk phone to purchase? It's got to be better than trial and error.
ST- we don't offer that feature so we cannot tell what phones are capable.

Does anyone have a list of phones that will send/receive a group text properly? I am fine sticking with a ST branded phone or BYOD. The only requirements are that it must be a smartphone and that it can send/receive group texts properly.

DId you try making a group then sending a text to the group?

I "THINK" that is how android works. It is more based on the OS settings then the phone, but in the end both are sending group messages its just how it is displayed on the phone.

In my experience on android it's more the app than the phone, OS, or Carrier. I know handcent or hangouts (does SMS now) allow you to add more than one person to a text and then that is your "group" works pretty well and on any phone I have tried it on.
