Bad idea putting a UPS on a freezer. it would cost hundreds or thousands, probably need to be true sinewave UPS, and would still probably shut off in minutes or hours (food will stay frozen for days if you don't open the door).

I think you may want a generator. Or blocks of dry ice.

well, the problem that i have had is that the GFCI circuits of my house have been popping randomly (or whatever it is called when they cut the current). about once or twice a month.
this weekend I happened to notice shortly after it happened, so I was able to just reset it and move on. but the last time it was like that for hours unitl I noticed, so some stuff started to defrost.
i'm hoping using a UPS will help a bit. A generator wouldn't help in that case , would it? not sure if there is a generator that will notice when there's no current to the freezer and will turn itself on?
i have no idea why the circuits are giving me that problem Frown

They haven't sent me anything in a while. I'll let you know if I get anything this week. Too bad you just came around with this; you could've used the 20% bag coupon from Staples on an UPS last week, maybe even allowing for a $-off as well. Frown

What size/brand UPS are you thinking about getting for your freezer?

You should definitely look into why the GFCI keeps popping, as it could end up damaging your equipment (ie; your new UPS, compressor on your freezer, etc.). UPSs will not last long dealing with that kind of problem on a routine basis. You will end up with dead/failing batteries in no time at all.

Yes, there are generators that will snap-on in the event of a power failure to whatever circuit they are plugged into/monitoring. Probably would last you a lot longer than an UPS and provide a much greater amount of utility, considering your intended usage.

I had a rock-solid APC 2400VA w/1200VA booster pack that lasted me many years w/an occasional outage every now and then. It died a horrible "death" in Costa Rica when their monopoly of a utility company (eg; ICE) decided to repair a blown transformer nearby cutting power to all connected residences about 20-30 times during the day. After that, several of my UPS's car-sized sealed lead-acid batteries 'gave up the ghost'. To rub salt in my wounds, ICE audaciously denied my claim for the damaged equipment, saying that no power outages had occurred on that horrible day. Mad EEK!

Costa Rica; a nice place to visit, but forget about the (stupid) idea of living there. nod

how much would they cost? what's the name of that "snap-on" feature or how would I look for one? never owned a generator in my life before, so a complete noob in that regard Stick Out Tongue

that sucks. Many third-world countries are mostly ok for living, but yeah, if anything goes wrong with anyone, usually you are on your own and you hold the short end of the stick....
not sure about ICE, but in Mexico, electric companies are all public/messy and forget about any kind of complaints...you will always lose. the same happens for other services.

I didn't thikn about it until it happened this weekend, since it has only happened once every one or two months or so.
I was looking at a 1000VA/600Watt one, as the freezer is supposed to have a max load of 580W or so

maybe all I need is a device that can emailme/text me, when the gfci pops so I can go reset it or call the wife to tell her to do it Stick Out Tongue
if such a thing exists, since it's very rare that I'm without electricity
