Will AT&T Galaxy S4 work on T-Mobile?

franzcatch 2,517 2,664 January 20, 2014 at 12:36 PM
I have T-Mobile service and am looking to buy an AT&T model of the Samsung Galaxy S4 from someone on craigslist.

However, I just wanted to check that it will work 100% fine on T-Mobile. I have read that the ATT S4 does get T-Mobile's LTE, but does it also work with their 3G and 4G?

Thanks for your help!

Umm...AT&T and T-Mobile are both GSM networks. So an unlocked S4 in theory will work (to a degree) on each carrier. The variants for each carrier are a little different supporting different bands. From what I've read:

The AT&T variant is model SGH-i337 with the following compatible bands:
GSM850, GSM900, GSM1800, GSM1900, UMTS850 (B5), UMTS1900 (B2), UMTS2100 (B1), LTE700 (B17), LTE1700/2100 (B4)

The T-Mobile variant is model SGH-m919 with the following compatible bands:
GSM850, GSM900, GSM1800, GSM1900, UMTS850 (B5), UMTS900 (B8), UMTS1700/2100 (B4), UMTS1900 (B2), UMTS2100 (B1), LTE700 (B17), LTE850 (B5), LTE1700/2100 (B4), LTE1900 (B2)

So depending on how your region is deployed with HSPA+/LTE, an unlocked phone may or may not fully be interchangeable on each network.
Seems like I would be better off waiting for a full T-Mobile one no?

I have a ATT using tmobile service. It will work with no problems period.

I did this as a loop hole to use Tzones. There is no issue and no differences, aside from wifi calling. But you can install a TMOBILE ROM and no one will know aside from the ATT LOGO on the back.

If you need help, with the unlocking and etc PM me or hit up XDA forums.

Only thing you need to do is make sure its not BLACKLISTED, and even if you buy it legit, the orginal owner can always put it as blacklisted if he files it as stolen and try to get a new one from insurance claims.

Get a Nexus 5 instead since $400 is too much to risk when it can get block within a year. Your out of luck if this happens(33% chance)

Even $200 Moto G and $400 Moto X are good too.

Nexus 5 and Moto will work 100% with TMobile.

Ask him/her about the firmware. I think 4.1.2 and up, you can't unlock the sim for free through the service mode. There might be an app on google play store that might be able to bring up the correct service mode, to unlock it (I will get back to you about the name of the app).

If the S4 is on a locked bootloader (locked bootloader is 4.2.2 and up), I don't think you can unlock the the T-mobile AWS band (not 100% sure). Also, on a locked bootloader, you need to use safestrap to install custom rom with the correct modem too.
