2009 Corolla water pump leaking coolant

Hi guys

I just went to get an oil change for my mom's car (2009 toyota corolla) and the technician told me the water pump was leaking coolant. He showed me how it looked (bad), and told me to get it fixed ASAP. They were going to charge $280, so I decided to come home first to get some second opinions.

First, will this be still covered under warranty? We bought the car new in June 2009 so it's still under 5 years since we got it.

Second, is $280 a complete ripoff (probably yes?). Is this a easy DIY fix? I am not a big DIYer but if it can save me a lot of money while not costing much time/effort, then I am willing to learn how to do it.

Check the warranty. Not sure if it would be covered depending on the miles. Waterpumps are usually a somewhat pricy fix since you need to pull apart a fair amount of the front of the car. Radiator, belts pulleys, front of the engine just to get space to even work.

Dealer would charge several hours of labor at around $120 per hour not to mention the pump plus fluid.

are you sure they are not lying to you,maybe the loosened a few hoses,try changing the coolant cap

It's BS when one assumes they make up the hours.

Dealers have set hours for parts replacement.. call and ask. then you can ask for the hourly labor charge. multiply the hours x hourly rate and you won't have to guess.

This corolla water pump is 5 bolts. It does require you to remove the alternator.

other shops will charge dealer rates, who knows if they follow the same times

A lot of water pumps will barely seep coolant from the shaft seal, and there may be a permanent drip hanging that never falls off. If nothing falls to the ground, don't worry. OTOH don't use any radiator flush chemical because they can make a marginal leak turn into a gusher. Fortunately Toyota water pumps seem to be much, much easier to replace than most because they're not driven by the camshaft timing belt, so replacement is mostly a matter of removing the belt, getting the alternator out of the way, and replacing the pump:

Be careful of rebuilt pumps that are not from Toyota or Nippondenso (Denso?), and brand new pumps don't cost much more. Get a new belt (cheapest ones by Gates, Goodyear/Kelly-Springfield are fine) because you may have to use the old one as a tool to help you remove the old pump's pulley.

$280 isn't bad honestly. According to AA a new pump (parts alone) could cost up to like $140. As others have said, labor is a big chunk because of the amount of disassembly required in some cars.

If you're going to DIY I'd suggest changing the tstat & belt and do a flush & fill at the same time.

Both times I've had a pump crap out, they spewed coolant all around the respective side of the engine including the belt, so be sure to clean things up really well before putting new equipment in.

Looks like you are covered by the warranty time wise. I assume it has not been driven for more miles than the warranty covers?

How many miles? Warranties usually have a time and miles component and its whatever comes first. Most manufactures recommend changing the water pump and timing belt (If applicable) around 100k miles. Usually this is a somewhat more expensive job. A lot of people also recommend going with a Manufacture water pump, not a 3rd party.

Is she loosing coolent? It would be easy to how bad the leak is this way. You should also mention to your mom if the engine reads HOT ever she should stop immediately and shut the car off and let it cool, to prevent head damage.

Was this the dealer or a quick lube place?

63000 miles.

This was done at a quick lube place. Quality Tune Shop if that matters. The technician said something was low/empty (I think he was pointing at the coolant) but I drove the car 1-2 weeks ago and didn't notice anything particularly weird. However, if I pop the hood, there is pretty apparent that something has been leaking because there is like pink bubbly stuff on the side where the coolant is. The technician echoed your same thoughts about the engine light.

Toyota's coolant is red, not pink. Although once diluted you might get a pink out of it.

It's probably worth getting a second opinion, and since it's under warranty I would take it to Toyota. Say you noticed a small amount of pink/red non oily fluid on the garage floor and thought it might be coolant. Don't mention the other shop. Since it's under warranty I would think it should be covered.

Yeah I already scheduled an appoint this afternoon with Toyota. The problem is I believe the warranty is 5 years/60,000 miles, so I am slightly over it. Either way, I need to get this fixed asap. Thanks for the advice!

If you arent very mechanically oriented, you will likely find this is not the job to start with. Do you change your brake pads? I would say that job is much easier- not that this is hard, but just more steps. Plus, once you have it apart, its not going anywhere till its fixed.
The fact that you are paying for an oil change indicates this is likely more than you should tackle.

At that point I would go to a trusted independent then. Your car isn't in warranty, they tend to be strict on this type of thing. Many towns have independent mechanics that specialize in say Honda/Toyota products. The one in my town is very honest, charges fairly, and uses OEM equipment when it's worth doing.
