This service was mentioned in the Swagbucks thread and I thought it deserved a thread of its own.

http://perk.com/perk/start

It is a service that offers rewards for running advertisements on various computer devices (Win, Mac, IOS, Android). It is targeted at mobile devices, but daily videos can be seen on personal computers.

Perk, the Perk Rewards Platform, and Perk points are only available in the United States, Canada, UK, Australia, New Zealand, and India.

PerkTV requires iOS 6+, Android 4.0+, or Windows Phone 8+ to operate, but having the OS requirements met doesn't guarantee fluid operation...some devices/ROMs just don't like Perk for some reason : /

Here is the rule on how points are earned with the Perk TV app:
For the US: Earn 4 points per 2 videos watched
For UK, Canada, & Australia : Earn 2 points per 2 videos watched
For IN: Earn 4 points per 20 videos watched
[perk.com]

Earnings depends on many factors including, but not limited to, your internet speed, network hardware and general infrastructure, number and types of devices, ISP (you may have caps/throttling)...typically (historically), it's around $1-$1.25/day/device with no intervention (re-starting trailers)

Can I use Perk TV on more than one device? [perk.com] Perk has said on their Facebook wall [facebook.com] that we can use multiple devices on the same single account but creating multiple accounts for the same person is a no, no. Perk has updated their terms (4/09/14). You are now limited to a maximum of 5 devices per account. [perk.com] You can add/remove devices to an account without issue as long as there are never more than 5 running per account.

Due to recent changes to the TOS and popularity of the Perk TV app, you are no longer allowed to let the app run continuously "without any user activity for any extensive period of time." This now means that you must either thumbs up or down videos (which will reward you with tokens for sweepstakes and other activities) or playback will be be forced to stop with a popup asking "Are you still watching?". At this current time it appears the inactivity timer is randomly set to pop up. (08/08/14)

Successful Device List
*To be fair some of the older successful devices may require some additional actions to get PerkTV working. Namely for Android based devices rooting and loading a custom ROM unto it. If these are things you are not familiar with, outside of your comfort level, or to put it plainly - if unwilling to read up over on XDA (or the like) then you should stick with the golden rule of the system requirements listed above, namely a minimum of Android 4.0+.

Ways to earn

-40 points daily (until 11:59 PM Central Time) for searches within the Perk browser/ Search on Perk's site [perk.com] (Points issued is varied, sometimes you will get up to 30 points per search each day but there is no guarantee. Check account activity [perk.com] to see how many points you have achieved so far.)
-10 points for daily videos

Mandatory Updates

The oldest versions of PerkTV no longer work. The app eventually stops rewarding views and gives an error requiring an update.

Videos Viewed Too Quickly

Occasionally you'll see this error when browsing videos. It's safe to ignore. You'll still be credited the next playthrough. There's no known way to avoid this entirely.

Redemption Period

As of 6/6/2014 rewards are now processed every Monday, Wednesday and Friday. The cutoff for each day is in Central Time, Sunday 11:59 PM (Monday), Tuesday 11:59 PM (Wednesday) and Thursday 11:59 PM (Friday). If you do not make that window or redeem any other time during the week your rewards will be processed the following rewards day. If you are unclear on unsure as to when your points will be rewarded the email with the subject "Your Perk is on its way!" will tell you when they will arrive. http://imgur.com/sPuvWAC

To redeem your points you will need a phone number from any of the countries Perk currently supports (United States, Canada, UK, Australia, New Zealand, and India). It doesn't have to be the same number every time but you must be able to received a call or text message to verify. You will need to verify your account each time you redeem.

Perk usually finishes up processing rewards around 5-7 PM Central Time. They also usually post on their Facebook page [facebook.com] when they have completed for the day. If you have not received your rewards by then they ask that you submit a ticket [perk.com] to them.

The Perk Wallet app allows for slightly more flexibility in redemptions while using Perk's apps. One perk (sorry) of the app is that you can cancel and/or change accidental or incorrect redemptions before Perk rewards you. Also there are discount for certain vendors. As of 08/23/14 you get a discount on Amazon, iTunes, and PayPal redemtpions. To get the discount you must use the Wallet app. The discounts are as follows:

$2524,250 (3%)25,000
$5048,500 (3%)50,000
$10097,000 (3%)100,000

$2533,250 (5%)35,000
$5066,500 (5%)70,000
$100133,000 (5%)140,000

Other Exploits

There have been reported cancellation of points for using the Cydia tweak fastforward.

Any use of ad-blocking is not allowed. Since in Android version 1.2.0, Perk has introduced a detection feature on all ad-blocking apps and modified HOSTS files with the intent of ad-blocking. Since Android version 1.2.2 the app requires root access which will remove entries in a modified HOSTS files with the intent of ad-blocking. The app will not open if any ad blocking apps are installed.

There have yet to be any bans for using Tasker/ FRep services to reenable video play on errors. But due to the updated TOS (4/09/14) all automation services and/or bots are not allowed. (10/11/2014) Some reddit users report reward cancellations for using Tasker/FRep.

Lastly your points will be cancelled for use of VPNs and Proxies.

Specific Version Highlights

For the Android 1.2.0 version, Perk has introduced a detection feature on all ad-blocking apps and modified HOSTS files with the intent of ad-blocking. It will no long run while they are installed. You will get the "This app can't continue." error on start-up.

Perk has introduced a Leaderboards feature which links via Facebook in the 1.8.0 version of the iPhone/touch app and version 1.2.7 of the Android app.

As of 4/10/2014, Version 1.6.1.0, of the Windows Phone version of Perk TV does not have an App Trailers section. This is just an FYI. It's not to encourage or discourage use. Just a statement of fact.

Perk released an Android Tablet version [google.com] today 4/23/14. They do not specifically list the devices that are compatible but hopefully we will have new entries soon enough as to which ones are working consistently.

As of 6/6/2014 the low bandwidth option has been added to every version of the app (Android, Android Tablet, iOS, iPad) except Windows Phone (Perk settings [top left motion - the List Icon aka Navicon {yup}] and enable 'low bandwidth'.) to help reduce overall usage and hopefully to include folks whose ISP enforces data capping. It reduces all trailers (App and Movie) from 480p to 240p. At this time most of the ads displayed in between trailers however are still at 480p. Yes the videos play faster, yes you make points quicker, yes it reduces stress on your equipment, and yes it helps reduce overall bandwidth. In short ideally you should be running PerkTV on your devices with the option enabled.

Users have reported typical data consumption at 170 MB / hour / device in standard resolution, and 90 MB / hour / device with the "low bandwidth" option selected. Your data consumption may vary depending on many factors including which device is being used, network hardware, ISP performance, etc.

In a perfect environment most users are earning roughly a $1 / device / day.

As of 10/11/14 on the iOS app Perk launched a new feature which allows you to receive points while watching tv. You choose the content you are watching and when the commercial plays you get 3 points per ad.

As of 10/18/14 Perk had made a new announcement concerning tokens and sweepstakes overall. There is a new Prize Mob feature. [youtube.com] More details are on the way.

Known Issues aka KI

The Windows app is currently listed as "in beta" and at times has issues automatically continuing after each video played. An unofficial list of devices which cannot play videos properly on Windows Phones is incoming. A workaround to the app not continuously playing videos is to move the device closer to your router. Apparently latency is a big issue with the Windows devices.

T&C Bullet Points (as of 10/8/2014) This is not the complete T&C, just the key points.
Perk is aimed at providing the best rewards program on Earth. As such, it's worth noting a few major items:
  1. Members are not permitted to attempt "gaming" or "hacking" the Perk program in any way.
  2. Members will not, under any circumstances, encourage other members to hack or game the Perk program including via online blogs, forums, groups, etc.
  3. Members are permitted to create one account per household. Multiple accounts via the same IP will require you to provide Government Identification in order to verify other members in the same household
  4. Members will not post referral links in an attempt to trick members through deceptive means, inaccurate descriptions, fake earning opportunities or other questionable methods as determined by the Perk staff
  5. Perk at its sole discretion will and can cancel or remove points from your account or suspend your account entirely if Perk has reasons to believe that rewards were earned through means that are against the Perk Terms & Conditions as well as the spirit of the guidelines. Examples of abuse that Perk's automated technology will flag and will not be tolerated include: extended inactivity, software that attempts to manipulate the program in any way, and app usage anomalies outside of normal behavior patterns.
  6. Violating any of these terms or any of the terms below will mean immediate revocation of earned points & rewards and potentially means being blacklisted from Perk in perpetuity.

Quick start guide for Android devices:
  1. Factory reset/wipe phone
  2. Do not log into Google account (skip)
  3. Turn on airplane mode (turn on wifi)
  4. (optional) Enable developer mode [askvg.com]enable always on
  5. Enable installation from unknown sources [wonderhowto.com]
  6. Check date/time [perk.com]
  7. Sideload APK (install PerkTV) 1.9.9: http://urlhasbeenblocked/1CdCaEg (urlhasbeenblocked so it's not hard to remember or type)
  8. Log in, enable low bandwidth, go.
*This is not a definitive list but a quick and efficient way to make sure you're consistently running a minimal amount of additional processes/apps while running PerkTV. You may modify the steps as you please such as adding a cache cleaner, delving deeper into the dev options to try and speed up processes even more, or even going through the apps installed and stopping/uninstalling anything not necessary to the operation of the device.

Working acceptable here so far. Not perfect - every now and then I have to restart - but ok.

One wish for Perk.tv: There should be a possibility to lower the resolution a little. Maybe we should write that on their facebook since most here have a problem with the amount of data that´s coming from "perking".

You appear to be in old Qwest territory. I have FIOS 25/25 residential and <$50/month. No cap afaik and on average I'm burning through 45GB/day farming on 10 devices.
I wish FIOS was offered in the PDX area.

Running a single device 24/7 for a month will consume 120 GB of data and yield $30.

That amounts to 4 GB of data per $1 earned. Considering most internet providers (Comcast and CenturyLink) cap data at 250 GB/Month (2 devices running 24/7), I decided to look into business service which has no cap.

[Rant]

Compared to the quick and painless process of obtaining a quote for service for consumer internet, getting a quote for business service is like pulling teeth. I got several phone calls at 8am (my bedtime is 3am), and several emails from a rep saying they are excited to work with me, but the messages contained no information about the service itself, or the price. However, I was given an "exclusive offer" to add phone service for only $25/month extra.

I don't know why, that in business there exists a culture that prizes faux "relationships" when the only thing that matters (in business) is the best product for the lowest price. I'm buying a service, not a relationship. I don't want to get to know Wesley, or pay $25/mo for phone service when it can be had for free these days.

[/Rant]

After much hassle, I was quoted this from Comcast:

Download/Upload
16/3-$85
50/10-$115
75/15-$145
100/20-$185

CenturyLink was easy to obtain a web quote for business service:

Download/Upload
12/1-$30 (3yr contract required)
Anything faster, or a shorter contract period is $125+ per month.

Now I have to decide if it's worth $55 more per month for slower DL speeds, faster UL speeds, and no data cap.

If only I had a 20 unit apartment complex, I'd be all over the 100/20-$185
Comcast does not have limits unless noted.

My guess is they haven't offered it as changing the quality would reduce load/buffer times...even only a few seconds decrease per ad+trailer would ad up over the millions of videos watched and significantly increase the number of points they pay out per unit of time, for both uncapped and capped internet subscribers. Of course, then again, it would seem they have a vested interest to play as many ads and ad trailers as possible as that's where their revenue comes from, so perhaps their reasoning for not offering quality scaling is due to something entirely different? Haha...I spent all day parsing pharmacology and physiology without pause, yet perktv's motivations have me running a bit of a mental loop at the moment...go figure.

If you have the sony xperia on the same account as any other device/s, and the other device/s are able to log in, it isn't the account, it's the xperia. As for getting banned, unless you're doing something you shouldn't be, I doubt it...and if you were banned, I presume you'd get an email from them, at the address you used to register the account in question. If your device isn't full of data you'd like to keep, I'd recommend doing a hard/factory reset, then making sure your firmware is updated, and that you aren't running any conflicting apps. Install perk and go from there.

I had previously read through those links, and one of them mentions a 300 GB cap for certain southern states. Other Google searches on Comcast imply that there are caps, and that in some markets they are "trialing" an excessive usage fee which amounts to $10 for every 50 GB exceeded.

This site [gigaom.com] claims to have an updated list of caps for the major ISPs.

I have never run into issues concerning my use of internet service, but I don't want to start. Has anyone else here had issues with exceeding data caps? There are various reports of people getting notices of termination, extra charges, and walled garden messages for exceeding usage caps.

Heck, a company doesn't even need a defined limit to terminate a customer. All terms of service include the right to terminate service if the company determines that the customer's use adversely affects the network. The statement is so broad that anyone can be terminated for any use of the service.

Sorry about that...that's ridiculous. Is it even legal for an ISP to pick and choose what websites/servers it blocks? Seems like a slippery slope to me, with the government in the pocket of so many companies. You might be able to call the local government communications/utility office and tell them you feel your ISP is practicing censorship and/or violating FCC net neutrality laws.

Otherwise, I'd simply switch internet providers, if possible...if you have, or are interested in and have the means of acquiring, a meaningful number of devices, the gains you'll garner by switching to an ISP that allows perk will likely significantly offset potential cost increases associated with such a switch.

Heh, me too.
Well, the hydros are working, but they bomb out to the main page after a short period of time. Exactly how long I don't know.

Ironically, the best working right now is my Kindle! LOL. It's amazing how that happens.

A great idea. Definitely post it. They read those. I'll support it on there as well, and hopefully some others will too.

I suggested they put an OPTION to cache the videos on the device to save bandwidth. They responded that it was a good idea and they'd look into it.
Now, I'm not expecting anything to happen with that, but at least that got their attention.

I'm using TWC and it is working just fine for me here. That's strange.

I'm going for the gold until the big boss man tells me to knock it off.
Me too, I've decided. I'm on CenturyLink, and they wait for 3 months of excessive use and then give 3 warnings. That should give me 6 months. Much longer than I expect this deal to last.

As mentioned already, I'd switch providers. I switch every year just to stay at the promotional rate of $30. I own both a DSL modem and a cable modem, so that makes switching easy.

I suggested they put an OPTION to cache the videos on the device to save bandwidth. They responded that it was a good idea and they'd look into it.
Now, I'm not expecting anything to happen with that, but at least that got their attention.
I was thinking this would be the best option, especially since they also benefit by reducing their bandwidth load. I wonder how much storage space would be consumed by their entire content? Likely much less than 4 GB, which is the amount of data consumed in a day. Perhaps caching opens them up to further exploitation?

Sorry to jump in here with more bad news and no resolution but you can't use a proxy, VPN or anything of the like with Perk TV. They will cancel your points when you go to cash out. It's a no go straight from their TOS.

They wouldn't know it was a proxy unless the proxy was already blacklisted, not that I'm encouraging people to break the rules.

Thank u for ur help! Is there any chance that Perk banned my IP or ..as i said it's because my ISP ? Tried with autoproxy (android) or something similar...used an european ip and worked..but the Usa proxy i tried doesn't work (anyway..it's not a good idea to switch proxies...dailly), maybe a Vpn will work on android?
