Expired rebate card...options?

454 111 March 7, 2014 at 01:22 PM
I have a Visa rebate card from Newegg (through myprepaidcenter.com) that expired last week. Has about $30 on it. To get it re-activated, I spoke to an agent from a number on the back of the card and he was pretty much reading from the book when he said that this was Newegg's policy to be strict about expiry dates.

Has anyone had luck with getting an expired card re-activated?

I would think you're pretty much screwed. They do give you 6 whole months to spend the money. If it was a check, you would normally get 1-3 months to cash it before it becomes void. Sorry, but you need to keep on top of these things when doing rebates. I'll gladly eat my words if you're able to get something done with this, and wish you luck.

I would be very very interested if you get it reinstated.

That being said, expiration dates are there to make them money. They won't give it back easily.

Don't have a Cardholder Agreement insert handy but on the back of the page of a MetaBank issued card from myprepaidcenter.com:
CARD EXPIRATION
The Card has a valid thru date embossed on the front of the Card. Once the valid thru date has passed, the Card will be void and will not be replaced. The Card will no longer be accepted at participating merchants and any value remaining after the valid thru date will no longer be available for use.

Same crap just happened to me as well on these Newegg rebates. Totally forgot I left them in my drawer then realized it had just expired by 1 day. Had almost $100 with the 3 rebate cards. Teaches me to never buy free after rebate stuff again for things I really don't need.

Call them. I had one that expired, I called and they replaced it. You have nothing to lose by calling.

Did call them, but as the OP said, I was SOL. Said they couldn't do anything. The terms are the terms.Frown

At least with the checks, I could deposit and simply forget about this ever happening.

check your state laws. some states may prohibit the expiration.
I had gotten one of these cards from a different merchant and in small print it said funds never expire but there was an expiration date on the card. They will start charging monthly fees then.

Yes, Some states (NY being one) have passed laws making it illegal for them to have monthly fees, but I am not sure if the law applies to the expiration date as well.

Either way, you have to put these in your wallet or somewhere else where you won't forget to use them up.... but the AMEX rebate cards from TD I know have expirations in the early 2020's so you are probably gonna use it before then.... Big Grin

That's a trap. They'll fee it out at $2/month within a year or two from issue.

You didnt read the rest of my post. Some states, including mine, have passed laws making it illegal for them to charge you those fees. So when it says it expires 11/2023....you have until 11/2023 to spend it. Sucks for all those who live in other states Frown

When you get the rebate card take it to your bank. You can have the $$ removed off the card for cash that you can then deposit into your bank account, This way you do not lose out on the rebate $$

I just ran into the same problem. I haven't called yet, but here in Oregon it cannot expire for 5 years after issuance.

I also saw these hidden FAQS from their website that states (at least for VISA) they can be re-issued with a 'service fee'. Not sure if the service fee is legal or not either within the 5 year limit, but I'll try!
