Do either support DD-WRT or Tomato?

The Linksys ea4500 may be cheaper, but I think the Asus is better. I've seen comparisons, and the Asus comes out on top. I have one, and it's a beast!! This is a KILLER deal!!!

I believe the ea series no longer supports ddwrt because of the chip they use.
the Asus will support ddwrt and almost impossible to brick because of Asus recovery software

Not so much. See http://chooser.smallnetbuilder.co...er/chooser Nothing made by Linksys even made the Top Performers list there. Frown

Then you have this for the ea4500: http://chooser.smallnetbuilder.co...sys-ea4500 with the statement in bold: "Ranked #5 of 6 products tested in this class."

The stock ASUS firmware is pretty well done, but if you want more then check out the Merlin build. It adds functionality on top of the stock firmware, while keeping most of the ASUS code and GUI. For those that want full-featured control then Tomato is available with enough features to keep you tweaking settings for quite a while.

I have installed several and they all been good. However, the newegg reviews on this particular one are horrid at best. Wonder if its the refurbished or just the router in general. I have no complains on the 11 I put in a month or so ago.

Yeah, I was tempted to buy it until I saw all the 1 star reviews about DOA units.

I'm sure a lot of people may know this, but just in case, be informed these can be compromised fairly easy. I would guess that Asus has addressed the issue, but it would be up to you to update the firmware.

I have had one for about a year and it has been flawless. I was originally going to install DD-WRT or Tomato but the stock firmware does everything I want it to.

3 star rating is a bit frightening. I'm sure it's a great router, but looks like high defect rate.

There was a review on Youtube on this router and when you stand it up, all the wires show on the top. When it's laying flat, it might generate too much heat and cause problems. Just my 2 cents since I was researching routers for a while.
