Xiaomi mi3 - which carrier to use?

chanj 493 272 May 21, 2014 at 09:05 PM
Hi guys - I'm hoping someone can help me!

I recently got a Xiaomi Mi3 from china, and so far I've got it working on tmobile. The xiaomi is unlocked, and the tmobile sim is brand new. I'm able to text, talk and use internet - however, I'm only getting EDGE all the time. So everything is super slow.

Does anyone know if can get 3G or 4G speed with any other carrier in the US? Or are there settings I can change on the phone for it to use faster speed on tmobile?

Thanks in advance for your help!

HSDPA 850 / 900 / 1900 / 2100

T-Mobile needs AWS (1700) for 3G/4G unless you are in specific areas where they have refarmed for 1900.

at&t has 3G on 850 and 1900, so you would have to use at&t or an at&t MVNO like Straight Talk or Cricket/AIO Wireless.

How do you like your Mi3? Shame it doesn't have LTE, but I was reading it sold out in 17 minutes in Malaysia when it launched like yesterday.

I love the xiaomi - feels very "slick" in my hands. Size/weight is good, screen is very sharp. I'm actually surprised how much I like it. I've used iphone and nexus before, and I have to say this is my favorite (feels the most "modern", if that makes sense). I'd definitely recommend this phone.

On the other hand, I'm still trying to get use to the interface - I've already changed the language to English, but there is still a lot of chinese when I'm using the apps (and I'm chinese!), which throws me off a bit. And a lot of the apps default to chinese (like when I search via Baidu, I get more chinese-centric results - vs the results I'm used to get from googling).

When I use it with WiFi at home, the speed and performance is very good. That's why I'm dying to get a carrier that can give me higher speed than 2G while I'm not at home.

I think I'll give Straight Talk a try first.

Thanks for your reply.

PS they sold out because the company keeps releasing small amounts of phone everytime - creating a fake demand-supply issue.

Yeah I just read this too. Typical Chinese companies. laugh out loud

Do you get Google Play? I heard the Chinese model comes with a pirated app store where all the apps are pirated.

Hopefully Xiaomi will come out with an LTE model when they go international. Cannot justify spending $300 on a phone with no LTE. Seems to backwards.

High speed data on TMobile is very mixed 80% 2G 56kbps or 20% 3G at 5mbps.A Full AWS TMobile phone will get 10mbps-35mbps 100% of the time.

Your to use an AT&T based network like AiO, ST, etc.

This still better than Oppo OnePlusOne. They sold 100s in 0 seconds.
