so that means this is the same as "new", except with less warranty (90 days)
More or less, my J1 back when had 0 shots and looked brand new so I figured the same. You do have to be careful at least at retail stores because I looked at a 30-110 that had been handled extensively and was really dirty.

In my post with the dpr link, the e-pl5 (same sensor as the e-pm2) has significantly better IQ.

What else is there to say? wave
Comparing 100% crops does not represent a typical use of these cameras, so that's not a way to measure IQ in the real world.

Frequently "factory refurbs" are the demo camera that sat in the case and no one ever put a battery in and used. Typically Nikon doesn't reset the shutter count unless they replace all the major components of the shutter (of course in this case it's electronic rather than mechanical anyways)
There are unsubstantiated rumors that Nikon has huge stocks of Nikon 1's that haven't been sold due to their outrageous $500+ pricing. Therefore, a lot of these "refurbished" packages might actually be "new" cameras, being opened by Nikon and resold as refurbished so they can claim a "loss" on their books.

The last round of J1-10-30-30-110-case refurbished sale looked suspiciously like the package sold at Costco and Sam's Club. A lot of us who got the J1 deal found shutter counts of "0" and everything in pristine, like new, condition.

Like I said, these are just rumors floating around the various Nikon forums.

Even if they didn't do it "on purpose" they may not have been able to sell returned stock as new (and the big box stores don't buy anything they cant return if it doesn't sell, so Nikon probably did get pallet loads of these things back "new") So yeah I'd definitely believe that.

In my real world usage, using the kit lenses, the E-PM2 beat the J1 every time.

Without knowing anything about your "real world usage," this is not a particularly useful comment.

Like I mentioned earlier, I really like both cameras and don't necessarily think that there's one answer here. It all depends on what specific features you need. For instance, the absence of a built-in flash would make the e-pm2 an absolute nonstarter for quite a few people, as it'd severely limit its versatility. For others, it's not a big deal.

The E-PM2 comes with an attachable flash.

Agreed. The IQ difference is noticeable in certain circumstances. For the same price, I'd say the E-PM2 is a better camera for most uses. For twice the price of a J1 though, the J1 is a fine camera. It will last basically forever too, since it has fewer moving parts...not that I'd want to keep using it years later.

Received my camera today, looks new basically, including all the packaging materials. Shutter count is zero.

Going from J1 to J3 you lose the remote shutter capability. Just saying....in case that is important to you. You also lose the ability take a photo every "n" seconds. n=1,2,3,5,10 etc. seconds.

Are you talking about the built in interval shooting or is there a way to control J1 from a computer?

I'm not sure why the poster said that it loses remote capability, if anything it gains more since it's compatible with both the ML-L3 IR remote and WU-!B or whatever wifi dongle. But I believe it does lose the interval timer at least without using something like the WU-1B. (could be WU-1A, I can't ever keep those two straight)
