That's a good price. I recently upgraded and sold my 6 year old 8500 on eBay for $120.
What did you upgrade to? I've heard great things about these and the only other ones I can think of that are said to compare are the valentines (valentinos?)

I can't believe blue led are still more expensive than red models. FYI, Blue Led models are horrible during the day, great price for 8500 x50 red tho, this thing saved me tons of money so farSmilie
I was told its due to the materials used to create the blue LEDs. They are rarer and more expensive.

I have this and it's amazing, especially when used with the smart cord and EscortOnline social tracking (or even Waze). You need to buy the smart cord, but it's worth it. Allows you to link the detector to your phone and use the phone's GPS to use location based information to help avoid tickets. The GPS feature also allows you to lock out known false signals (that one market who's door sensor points right at the street you drive by each day - you know the place).
Smart cord also adds a USB plug to your car, so you can plug in your phone while using the smart cord. Nice feature.
I have a less expensive detector that has saved me from a few tickets, but also gave me a sever case of paranoia from all the false positives. This would be a great feature and the guy I know who has one speaks really highly of it.

I really want to get a radar detector hardwired like this car:

Any tips? I just bought the same model/year.
Google and car forums. Surely there's a DIY or info out there

I own the silver version and have been pleased with it. Paid 165 for a refurbished unit, so 200 for brand new is still reasonable. Plenty of falses, but you soon learn that most all legit speed traps employ ka band.

I recommend a hard wire kit to mount the unit up high for the sake of visibility, better functionality, and for a tidy look. They're like 8 bucks on ebay and are wired in very easily without soldering.

FYI, a buddy has the black version and mounts it just over the dash. It very quickly has gotten cracking in the finish from the sun beating down upon it. My silver one mounted high still looks new.
That's what my friend does and then runs a wire to the dash, near the swearing wheel to mute the alerts when needed. Good suggestion.

Yeah I agree with all of that except the app is finicky at best. It doent give me alerts unless its open (on top of any other apps) app and the screen is on. Same goes when I try to use the report button on my smart cord. It has to be on the screen and running for it to work. I wish it would just integrate with waze.

The detector works very well on it's own though. I know its probably saved me from at least 2 tickets now.
Which means it probably payed for itself already. People don't realize that - when they see the price tag they say it's ridiculous.

i have a question, for those of you who reside in texas, if using one of these radar detectors in a rural area would a cop pull you over and ticket you for having this radar detector? Does this jam their signal which provides them with an error reading by that time the radar should alert you that you're being clocked and you would slow down by then? sorry radar noob
Detectors are legal federally. The only state to dispute that is WV. All jammers are illegal.

The way it works is by detecting the signal their guns are putting out and telling you, hopefully, before you can be detected by the gun. There are extra signals that go further than the gun can read.

Actually, Virginia and DC ban radar detectors (and much of Canada) on all vehicles. Some states, e.g. Illinois, ban them on commercial vehicles.

Not sure what you meant by "jammers" -- most states permit laser jammers. Radar jammers would be illegal everywhere, if that's what you meant.

Every. Single. Cop where I reside drives around with their radar constantly activated, without fail, so this is definitely dependent on your local municipality. I grew up in an area that was almost 100% LIDAR and in that case you need to spend far more money than this for even a sliver of protection. My radar detector is definitely 'working out' for me, and even if I get a ticket every other year, I consider it the cost of doing business and mentally write it off as a speed tax. YMMV I suppose.

Also, pace? Does this mean faster than traffic or 'eyeballing' it? Traffic I could understand, but the subjectivity of either one probably leads to a lot of court cases, no? Of course, most officers revel in the overtime that traffic-court provides EEK!.
Pace as in follow along behind the person and match their speed with yours. With the retirement of all the ford crown victoria and the advent of Chargers and Caprices as the dominant LE vehicle, very few people recognize law enforcement headlights behind them now.

This right here is a perfect example of opinion and not a fact.

Got this radar sunday and running it with a Whistler CR90 this week to compare which is "better"
So far the 8500 is better in K band areas while the CR90 has the amazing feature of Redlight cameras.
Havent seen a cop so no KA detection yet.
Hey if it helps you with red light cameras more power to you. Very very few cops like red light cameras or photo radar vans. They are only money making schemes and are always done by 3rd party vendors. The whole point of citations and traffic enforcement in general should be to change the way people drive in order to make it safe for all on the roads. Photo red light cameras and radar vans don't do that.

R u a real cop? If so help slick dealers how to avoid a ticker after we are stopped." I need to go to bathroom urgent " etc will work?
Yes I am, and no that doesn't work, at least for me. Anytime someone uses a "i'm on the way to the hospital", I follow them to the ER and wait for them to check in. The cost of walking out of the hospital will be larger than the cost of the ticket.

IMO the best way is to be respectful, don't act stupid, be polite. Oh for the ladies, unbuttoning your shirt to show more cleavage, in this day and age most likely will get you a ticket more than a warning because cops are more afraid of being accused of being sexist, inappropriate etc etc.

Most places aren't as covered in LIDAR as yours is. Still a lot of Ka-band radar where I am, and these detectors are great.
Yes more and more departments are integrating k-band moving radar into their patrol cars. They pay for themselves. This is the type of radar that radar detectors will definitely give you an edge and save you a ticket.
