Is this a good deal for a lower end gaming laptop?

kinda lame they won't allow the additional savings too - adding coupon removes all other discounts.

I haven't seen many better deals lately, especially for a brand new laptop, hence why I posted. I can't comment on the build quality or display quality, though.

why is this considered a lower-end gaming laptop?

Just wondering.. is it because it's not the newest gtx-880m?

or just 8GB memory? or is this particular i7 processor not very fast? I plan on adding memory and SSD as main HDD

I am looking to get a SIGNIFICANTLY faster laptop than my 1 year old Lenovo y500 ( i7 -3630QM 2.4ghz, 8GB, GT-650m, with 256gb SSD). Hopefully 25-30% faster? I am doing a huge amount of photo editing and my Y500 is just not as fast as I'd like.

Should I get something like a Asus ROG G750? i7 4700HQ (2.40GHz) 24GB Memory 1TB HDD 256GB SSD NVIDIA GeForce GTX 880M

Thank you!

my only concern, from my experience with non-gaming laptops with discrete graphics, is overheating and throttling. it seems the major difference between gaming laptops and "entertainment" laptops like this one is how they manage heat when stressed, all else being equal.

also, this doesn't have a dvd player

If you're looking for a significant upgrade, do not buy this laptop. The GTX 880M is the type of performance upgrade you need.

I don't think the HP would be significantly faster than what you already have. If you are needing much more powerful mobile graphics then something with 880M is probably where you'd want to look. I don't know what is required for photo editing though. Maybe you just need more RAM?

well, the processor makes the biggest difference (and of course SSD). Is this HP at least 30% faster than my i7-3630qm 2.4ghz?

Thanks!

I thought photo editing was based on processor speed and not graphics card? Anyways, if I'm wrong, make sure you're forcing your computer to use the dedicated card on the photo editing application and not the integrated card. I believe you just have to right click the application and look in the menus but if I'm wrong check Google.

No.

If you really want a big performance increase you need to move to a desktop. The soon to be released Haswell-E with 6 or 8 cores and quad channel DDR4 would destroy your laptop.

If you must stay with a laptop then you'll have to hold out for Skylake for hopes of real performance gains.
