Some Advice on fast Lenses for good Bokeh and good low light ability
#######################################################################

Quote from JPD19 View Post :
I purchased the camera more for photos only, but with the newborn son on his way, I'm sure I'll be video recording as well. But my primary goal is to take great quality photos...portraits with bokeh/background blur.
kapeed1-The bokeh/background blur depends on the lens, you can get effect with either camera. You will not get that effect with either of the kit lens in Package 1 or 2.

The rule of thumb for portrait / good bokeh is to go with lower f number. lens usually are from f1.8 to f5.6, the lower the better. Every halving of f number increases the light gathering four times and the bokeh doubles. f1.8 best. f5.6 worst for bokeh.

If you go with Canon (and since I am more familiar with Canon), the lens you should get for good bokeh are as follows:
1) Canon 35 mm f2 IS (4.9* and 600$ at Amazon) [amazon.com]: Very nice lens, with great DxoMark rating (25), (see DxoMark 25 here [dxomark.com]). plus you have IS that further improves low light ability by allowing you to use longer exposures when handheld. Though not exactly a portrait lens, it can serve as quasi portrait/good indoor lens since the full frame equivalent focal length is 55 mm.

2) Canon 50 mm f1.8 (4.6* at Amazon) [amazon.com]- the NiftyFifty now available at Canon refurbished store for 85$ [canon.com] (hurry). Solid nice cheap lens which is also a good performer. The boken is good, not very great since lower number of blades (only 5 non rounded blades) in diaphragm. Full frame equivalent focal length is 80 mm.

2.1) If you got some extra cash, the 50 mm f1.4 is better but more expensive than the above, has a nicer bokeh since lens diaphragm has more blades and they are rounded. Around 350$ after rebate new.

3) Sigma 18-35 mm f1.8 (4.9* and 849$ on Amazon) [amazon.com]- Very highly rated zoom lens that is equivalent to multiple primes, highest DxoMark rating of 28. The downside is that it is quite bulky, but if you can withstand the weight, nothing like it, a real gem. A zoom but with better quality than a prime - real technological and optical innovation.

4) Canon EF-S 24 mm f2.8 STM (4.9*, 150$ Amazon) [amazon.com] - Recently launched lens, around 150$ new, great for video since it has STM silent motor. Also f2.8, so has medium bokeh. However this is not really portrait length, this is wide angle but will still give a medium bokeh.

4.1) Canon EF-S 40 mm f2.8 STM (4.7*, 199$ Amazon) [amazon.com] - Only 135$ at Canon refurbished [canon.com]. Recently launched lens, around 150$ new, great for video since it has STM silent motor. Also f2.8, so has medium bokeh. However this is not really portrait length, this is wide angle but will still give a medium bokeh.

5) Sigma 17-50mm f2.8 zoom lens, 4.2* and 469$ [amazon.com] at Amazon. - If you want good bokeh AND ability to zoom both, then this is nice one lens option and you may not have to purchase any other prime lens. This is the best bokeh you can get in a zoom, though only medium(f2.8) compared to a single focal length prime (f1.8).

Overall, I would say, definitely go with #2 lens since it is only 85$, if you have more money, go with #1 or #2.1 or #3(if you can withstand the weight and want a zoom), or #5 (if you want zoom with good bokeh), or #4 and #4.1(if you want video and medium bokeh). As you can see, it is all a matter of tradeoff. If you want zoom, you get less bokeh, best is #5 or #3(heavy!). For maximum bokeh, use a prime (#2 and #2 or #2.1 for maximum boken and #4 or #4.1 for medium bokeh plus video).

Don't thumb this deal up too quick. Let the hardcore SDers get this deal before it goes to the FP and gets raped by the lurkers. This is epic frontpage worthy.

Thanks for sharing OP. You will get my first born. Big Grin And reps too! Smilie

Price is almost same as what we paid during coupon mix up (20%,10%, 15%) a month back.
I guess, we might not see this for this kit (18-135 is stm) for some time unless Canon website messes up with coupons again.
