UPDATE #2: I just got off the phone with their customer support.
Here's what I was told:
YES...you CAN use your own SIM card...any GSM card will work AFTER the 31st of December. What is going to happen is any device that is activated prior to the 31st on their site will be sent a PIN unlock code to the device on the 31st which will deactivate the existing SIM but unlock the unit itself. At that point Customer Care said you can use any GSM sim card in the unit. The programming will remain, and functionality will be restored. They said it's basically like unlocking a phone is what they are going to do so that it can function with any GSM sim at that point.
IMPORTANT UPDATE: According to THIS PDF ON THE OEM's WEBSITE the service/support/warranty will expire at the end of this month. No wonder they were so CHEAP! However, it appears that some are thinking that the unit might still function fine with a different SIM card in it OR that it will always function as just a local alarm (siren only). I'm going to order one of the cheap SIM cards on Amazon and add some cash to it and see if the unit still functions or not with SMS messaging. I'm also curious if I could potentially just call T-Mobile and reactivate the SIM card that comes with the unit...
I searched and didn't find anything here on Slickdeals for this one...I just ordered this so I can't review it or speak to it other than the 2 hours of research I've done online about it. Reviews look decent enough at 4 out of 5 stars.
SAM Security C5 Self-Activated Monitoring System
List Price: $199.99
(Next closest price I could find reputable was $29.99 for the system and 1 expansion kit from Rakuten, so still a better deal, and compared to other DIY security systems a smoking hot deal if it works well enough)
Details on the system here:
What's Inside the Box?
1 - Wireless Keypad Control
1 - PIR motion detector
1 - Door/window sensor
2 - remote controls
2 - rfid keyfobs
1 - ac/dc adapter
2 - standby batteries
The system also comes with a $25 prepaid T-Mobile SIM Card, which is how the system is both programmed and sends alerts via SMS text to your cell phone.
Quote :SAM C5 comes with a promotional $25 credit for SMS and/or Voice. Based on an average of 2 SMS' per day you should get approximately 5 month's usage and 60 minutes of Voice available to call out and to alert user of security events and allows for listen-in functionality. When $25 credit is depleted to $5, you will be notified to refill online at www.securedbysa

I also ordered 2 of the Expansion Kit:
SAM Self Activated Monitoring Expansion Kit
List Price: $99.99
Price: $9.99 Free Shipping for Prime Members
You Save: $90.00 (90%)
EDIT: if sold out on Amazon it looks like Rakuten.com has the expansion kit even cheaper at 11 cents plus $6 shipping! http://www.rakuten.com/prod/sam-s...32288.html
THE BACKGROUND STORY:
I have been searching lately for a simple home security system that didn't require a monthly monitoring fee. Most do and those that don't typically cost between $100-300 and use either an internet connection or a home landline.
To my surprise I found this one and while I just ordered it I figured other Slickdealers might want to try it out too. For the price and fact that it's fulfilled by Amazon so easy returns etc...can't really go wrong to try it out. And the reviews are decent enough.
I figure if I hate it...it's going back easy enough. If I like it, it'll cost all of $30 hardware and around $25 a YEAR to have it send me alerts. I'm going to be pairing the system with a few Foscam cameras as well so that I can also see what's happening on my phone if the system sends me an alert.
SIDE idea: while you have to activate the SIM card through them, I wonder if you could also just pull it out afterwards and use it in a T-Mobile prepaid phone? Just a thought.

YOu may also want to check out the android app TASKER and also google voice.
The sleep feature of the motion sensor is a battery saving feature! it is not a bug. think about it. appreciate it!
These are made by a Chinese manufacturer Chuango http://www.chuango.com
Inside circuit boards have Chuango logo.
There is a SAM C5 App for Android.
For iOS try G5 Alarm app from Chuango (works well for basic operations, syntax of some settings vary slightly). All apps make use of SMS.
There is a more detailed manual on some Dutch site.
On the backside there are terminals to input wired sensors (for those with older wired sensors already installed) and output an electronic lock . These can be potentially used to interface the system with some other smart thingie like an Arduino or Raspberry-Pi or motion ip cam.
All the sensors operate at 315MHz band. if you are a DIY coder, you can ditch the (buggy) control system, instead build your own using:
- Raspberry Pi or Pogoplug running linux
- a ~$10 DVB-T USB dongle see http://sdr.osmocom.org/trac/wiki/rtl-sdr
- https://github.com/merbanan/rtl_433 (use command rtl_433 -f 314880000 to switch to 315MHz from default 433MHz) (Others have had success with the SAM window sensors using rtl_433 -f 315000000 )
the rtl_433 tool prints out the sensor and command as each signal is detected. You would have to add some extra code to email you whenever the system is armed and a sensor is triggered.
