The intent of this thread is for users, both new and not-so-new, to ask questions, and help with tips/advice. This is not by any means the "gospel". Please feel free to add your words of wisdom, and if you have questions, just ask! If you have a tip that will make sweeping easier for folks, please feel free to share. This is a community effort. We all will benefit in some way.

The Basic Advice/Tips for the new-to-sweeping folks.
Enter for the items you want/need. If you have no interest in trips, avoid the sweeps where the only prize is a trip. If you know you can't afford the tax on a new vehicle, avoid entering for those.

Set up folders in your bookmark/favorites. Create a separate one for each month, and file any sweeps you are interested in into the folder corresponding with when it ends. Then, if you have a day where you're pressed for time, enter at least the ones ending that day.

Play the instant win games.

Follow the rules! If a sweep is restricted to only females, a certain age group, certain states, etc, make sure you fit the criteria! If you don't, move on to another sweep that you do qualify for. Do not create a bunch of email addresses so you can enter something more than once, or so you can play an Instant win game more. The Sponsors can tell, and will DQ you. You're better off playing by the rules than cheating and getting disqualified and having NO entries.

Don't immediately dismiss essay required sweeps (or recipes, photos, etc)....well, unless you know you don't want to write something. A lot of people pass on them, so you might have a better shot at winning something.

Don't expect this to be lucrative enough to become a job. Yes, a lot of us win, and often, but not nearly enough to quit a job!

Expect things to go slow at first. It takes a while for the wins to roll in. But once they do...look out!

Expect to occasionally hit a dry spell. It happens to ALL of us.

DEFINITELY USE YOUR REAL INFO! If you use a fake phone number, and a sponsor is calling to notify people of wins, you'll never know what you missed out on. I, and many others, have been doing this for a long time, and we have no problems with sales calls. Also, use your real name. If your name is Robert or Catherine, using Bob or Cathy is ok, as they are known acceptable shorter versions of that name. if your name is Matilda, and you go by Fluffy, don't use Fluffy. Looking at your ID to get an affy notarized, they may reject it because the names don't match. The sponsor may also say "Fluffy won, not Matilda". So stick with using your real name, or something close to it.

Most of all, HAVE FUN! And don't be afraid to ask questions. We were all new to this at one time. Any one of us would be happy to answer questions.

For easy form filling, check out Roboform [roboform.com]. Google Tool bar and the autofill feature on IE also work well.

For Mac users, the best form filler is 1Password: http://agilewebsolutions.com/products/1Password (thanks javaFlower!)

FireFox Form Filler browser extensions: https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/...ll&cat=all

To set up the autofill feature in IE: Click on Tools, then internet options, then choose 'content'. When that pops up, click on "Autocomplete", and make sure to check the boxes for forms and passwords on forms. This is not a good idea if you are on a shared/public computer!

Before we had this thread, limpstar posted this site for info on sweeps & taxes in the I Won Thread:
All About Sweepstakes Taxes
http://contests.about.com/od/taxe...gtaxes.htm

Also consider talking to your tax preparer and/or researching further into your tax responsibility.

I have found this page helpful in understanding some of sweep's law - a sweeps law co.'s site:
The Lustigman Firm; Attorneys at Law
http://www.sweepstakeslaw.com/
The Lustigman Firm provides experienced legal counsel that helps protect the business interests
of its advertising and promotional clients around the United States and Canada

What does " age of majority in your state or province " mean?

(sometimes abbreviated as AoM+ )

it's the legal age of that state or province...

The Age of majority is the threshold of adulthood as it is conceptualized in law. It is the chronological moment when children legally assume majority control over their persons and their actions and decisions, thereby terminating the legal control and legal responsibilities of their parents over and for them.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Age_of_majority

there's a list by country and by US State there....

For most purposes, the age of majority in the U.S. is 18,
except for 2 states with the age of 19 (Nebraska,Alabama)
and one state with the age of 21 (Mississippi)
and two (American Samoa and Puerto Rico) that retain 14 as the age of majority.
Occasionally PA is listed under the 19+ or 21+

Regarding missing prizes
If you were expecting a prize you've never received you can complain 1st to the sweepstakes administrator, then to the sweepstakes sponsor and finally to USPS Postal Inspectors

Occasionally a....less than ethical sweep will get posted.
You might end up finding unauthorized charges on your phone bill. Unauthorized charges on the phone bill are what's called "Cramming". Once you contact the company that's charging you, and you have requested your phone company remove the charge, if you so choose, you can file a complaint with the FCC.

FCC Online complaint form: esupport.fcc.gov/complaints.htm

You can also file your complaint with the FCC's Consumer Center by e-mailing [email protected] or calling 1-888-CALL-FCC (1-888-225-5322) voice or 1-888-TELL-FCC (1-888-835-5322) TTY

You can fax your complaint to 1-866-418-0232

Or by snail mail:
Federal Communications Commission
Consumer & Governmental Affairs Bureau
Consumer Inquiries and Complaints Division
445 12th Street, SW
Washington, D.C. 20554.

I also recommend a 3rd party block on your line to prohibit this from happening. 3rd party blocks don't affect your phone in any way, except by not allowing some company outside of your local phone company from adding charges to your bill.

Thank you KMA and Implode for your help and opinions. I don't think it is the same value as the first set. Since you both think it would be alright to contact them, I think I will. It will definitely be an appreciative note. I think I'll just inquire as to why it wasn't the set shown in the contest.

I haven't won much at all this year and so this was a little disappointing - but I will survive - ha.

Reps and good luck to you both.

Hi all. I'm fairly new to the site, and entering sweeps. A few minutes ago, I overheard my husband giving our address to someone over the phone and gave him a questioning look, so he handed it to me. The thickly-accented story was that we'd won a $100 gift card for "visiting their affiliate site, and there would be a one-time processing fee of $9." My response was "I don't pay for sweepstakes." *click*

So, now that they have my full name and address (hubby didn't know that I never give out his number), should I be worried? Has this happened to any of you? What, if anything, was the outcome?

Thanks for any help!

I don't worry about that type of stuff too much and block the number. Most everyone's name, address, and phone number is easily available. If he gave credit card info, you can contact your bank and they might add a fraud alert or send you a new card.

If you have information about who they said they were, you can report to the FTC http://www.consumer.ftc.gov/artic...ting-scams and ftc.gov/complaint If they were trying to impersonate a company, reporting them to that company might help as well.

He didn't give out our credit card number, which I'm very grateful for. One of the things that kinda set off the B.S. alarm right away was how vague she was about everything. No company name given. I think they did leave a message once with their phone number. Maybe I'll report that. Thanks for your response.

Yes, they're the same sweeps, but you can enter daily on each of the sites listed in the rules. Each set of rules has different sites you can enter through daily - i.e. Women's World, First for Women, Life & Style Weekly, In Touch Weekly, Sweep On. Regardless of how many sites you enter through daily, there is still only ONE prize across all entry sites (not one prize on each site).

FB updated their contest/promotion terms (can't say that I'm a fan of this change.)

https://www.facebook.com/facebook...ions-terms

It's now Easier to Administer Promotions on Facebook

We've updated our Pages Terms in order to make it easier for businesses of all sizes to create and administer promotions on Facebook. Here's what Page administrators need to know:
We've removed the requirement that promotions on Facebook only be administered through apps
Now, promotions may be administered on Page Timelines and in apps on Facebook. For example, businesses can now:
Collect entries by having users post on the Page or comment/like a Page post
Collect entries by having users message the Page
Utilize likes as a voting mechanism
As before, however, businesses cannot administer promotions on personal Timelines.
Accurate tagging is required in promotions
In order to maintain the accuracy of Page content, our Pages Terms now prohibit Pages from tagging or encouraging people to tag themselves in content that they are not actually depicted in. So, for instance:
It's OK to ask people to submit names of a new product in exchange for a chance to win a prize
It's not OK to ask people tag themselves in pictures of a new product in exchange for a chance to win a prize
We hope these updates will enable more businesses to use Facebook to launch their promotions. For more information regarding the changes to our promotions policies, check out our downloadable Promotion Guidelines, which include FAQs and best practices for running promotions through Facebook.

infringing on friends with spam is kinda tacky, I would just leave it alone. Best case scenario is random referral, and worst is they unfriend you--and you lose touch.
I hear people say this about FB all the time but I've found that my personal friends don't mind me sharing links and some actually appreciate finding out about new sweeps. I'm talking about my real friends here, not my "sweeps" friends. I suppose it depends on how much daily sweeping you do but I've entered an average of 20-30 FB per day for a while and nobody complains. I'm pretty sure there is a setting to ignore someone's posts if your friends get really annoyed by it so that kind of stuff doesn't hit their home page. I think the reality is that most everyone is probably already getting spammed to death on FB anyway from the hundreds of "likes" they have so another few sweeps posts mostly go unnoticed.

I do 600 sweeps a day and 40%+ are FB related...

I need some advice please. I'm currently living in an apartment (we've got about 10 months left on the lease) but I also split time at my mom's house which is about an hour drive south.

I usually visit my mom's house every weekend. All the sweeps I've entered I've used my mom's address just because it's more permanent and I know some of these sweeps take a long time. Plus my drivers license still shows that address as I've moved around a lot post-college graduation and I hate changing my address on my license.

Should I continue using my mom's address or would you suggest using the address I'm at now? I only ask because I'd hate to receive a time sensitive letter and be late on it.

Thanks in advance for any insight you can provide. All the best!

1) If you have moved around a lot, what makes you think this location is more permanent.

2) If you change addresses a lot, that might red flag judging agencies about a potential abuse.

3) Redirecting mail is a huge hassle. If you can avoid doing so that is advisable with huge lag times in delivering prizes.

If your mom doesn't mind handling that, I say go for it.

Thanks for the input.

1) I was referring to my mom's address as being more permanent since she's been there 14 years. Sorry if I didn't word it correctly in the original post.

2) When I say I've moved around a lot I wouldn't say it's an abnormal amount, maybe once every 1.5 years when my leases are up. So hopefully they don't flag me and think I'm trying to abuse the system. I just started sweeping so who knows.

3) I figured if it's a small win that doesn't require my signature then it's okay going to my mom's house and I can just get it when I visit on weekends. If they do need my signature I guess I can always drive down there and sign for it at the post office. I live in the Houston area so it's all highways in between so the drive doesn't seem too long.

Thanks again for your advice.
