Reds and Greens are the same drives except that Greens park the heads every 8 secs on idle whereas Reds are set to 300 secs.
read this post: Hacking WD Greens(and Reds) with WDIDLE3.exe
*The BLACK and BLUE drives do NOT have Intellipark, so don't even ask!!
Checking Red or Green?:
Tool: CrystalDiskInfo 6.3.2 get the standard portable edition.
Run app, look at the device model.
- WD Red WD50EFRX
- WD Green WD50EZRX
From info that I have received from over a dozen people, the determining factor appears to be the DCM info. All of the green drives that were inside the WD Elements 5TB external drive that were reported to me had DCM: DCADBAD on the box bottom label, while all of the Red drives had DCM: DCADBAC on the box bottom label.
Ripping the drive out:
You won't be able to RMA a drive that's removed from the enclosure unless you put it back in the external before RMA. If you're careful, you can remove this drive from the enclosure and leave no signs of entry whatsoever. I pulled all my 4 out with a credit card and a screw driver and kept all the innards in a little plastic bag in case I need to RMA any of them. There is no seal or sticker that proves you opened it on these. The inside drive will have the same 1 year warranty the elements external had, so you won't luck out on getting 3 year support on these. Use a credit card to get additional warranty depending on the card.
Take lots of pictures to remind yourself how everything was 3 years later when you NEEED to RMA.
I used this video to remove mine: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AxMieAd
Just be patient and careful and it'll come out easily. All mine passed SMART tests so no damage done to them after removal.
Also, while most (seemingly 90% of people) have reported a WD Red coming out of this, there are still some that have gotten WD Green HDDs instead. So make sure you check these through software while still in the enclosure before you decide to cut the UPC out and send the rebate. TigerDirect should allow you to return/exchange the HDD if you report to them that you've gotten an error trying to utilize the drive.
Good luck all.
