From my experience they start out firm and soften up, have had one for about a year and it's gotten pretty soft now.

2.5 pound memory foam? And 1.5 pound "high density"??? That is extremely NOT dense memory foam. I had 3 inches of 4 pound and now have 4 inches of 5.3 pound plus base layer of dense foam.

Foam weight relates to how much a 1 foot by 1 foot by 1 foot of foam weighs. So, for this mattress, 1 square foot of memory foam only weighs 2.5 pounds. That is very very light. I would not buy any memory foam less than 4 pound, and I prefer 5.3 pound. I weigh 190 pounds and the 5.3 pound memory foam is not too firm.

The main differences between the feel of memory foam and a traditional mattress is that memory foam is completely flat on top. The sensation is like laying down on a board it is so flat. Traditional mattresses are fluffy or billowy on top giving the sensation of softness. The 'flat as a board' sensation can take a bit of getting used to. But that feeling only lasts a second or two, then the memory foam succumbs to your weight and body heat. After that initial 'shock' of feeling flat as a board, memory foam is quite soft and comfortable. The best sleep I've ever had.

Do yourself a favor, avoid this mattress, the foam is nowhere near dense enough to support your body weight. Also, the lighter weight memory foam will wear out much faster. You'll find yourself sleeping in a 'rut'. Just google 'memory foam', the information is all out there and readily available.

Luck all...

Would something like this be worth it for a child? Looking for something for a 7 year old and this might fit the bill.

Not the same mattress at all! The one you reference at Amazon has 4 pound memory foam, this one only has 2.5 pounds. BIG difference. I can tell a major difference between my old 4 pound and my new 5.3 pound.

My son has the mattress in full. It's firm with no bounce. He likes it, but in the summer he's very warm, it retains heat. Great for winter laugh out loud

We also purchased a memory foam for the pull-out couch for when my nephew sleeps over. No more bar in your back.
