O2 is a very very good amp in that it does not color the sound. However, some people do not like the sterile amping it produces. In any case, it is a highly rated amp that has countless reviews. You should be fine for a while with it.

As for DAC, it is the last in the chain of sound improvement (headphones > Amp > DAC). If you have a solid pair of headphones, then go for a DAC, although the gains will be minimal. I would recommend you put that money towards a better set of cans.

Thanks for the quick reply! I have some ath-m50s and just ordered a pair of the ath-AD900X's for an open pair of cans and was thinking of biting on the next beyer dt 990 with audiotechnica 2020+ deal. Do you think a DAC would be good or would be fine without one?

You should be fine without a DAC honestly. If you can demo them, that would be the best, but check your ego to see if you can really hear a difference. DACs are a lot more subtle than most people give them credit for.

will this sound better than plugging your headphone into the headphone jack of a stereo receiver?

Depends on the receiver. Many do not really invest in the headphone amp part of the receiver as most people will only use the speaker portion.

Great advice, repped. I agree, too many audiophiles worry about the DAC. Think of what it does - converts digital to analog. Sure some algorithms are better than others, but the diff is marginal (the DAC in the iPhone 6, for example, is pretty top notch). I agree, spend the money on better headphones, make sure you have an amp strong enough to drive them (internal amps are fine in many cases, but not all), and most importantly, make sure your source files are high quality. More bang for the buck.

This needs to go FP.

I paid 150 for mine 2 years ago and do not regret it at all.

I built mine for about $30, and I'm listening with it right now. I run a modded iPod 5G with Elna capacitors and a custom HPF at 20Hz to the O2, and then to my HD595's. It sounds absolutely incredible.

Pre-assembled at this price is a bargain.
