Unlocking your phone with the AT&T Nokia GoPhone series:

1. DO NOT turn on the phone yet and never put a SIM card throughout this process! (If you have already done so, do a hard reset by pressing and holding volume down and power/wake button)
2. Write down IMEI # found on the packaging or inside the phone cover.
3. Submit AT&T unlock request & agree to Terms to unlock as "Non-AT&T Mobility Customer" via https://www.att.com/deviceunlock/?
4. You'll get 2 emails in the span of 12-24 hours. (1st is confirmation request # & 2nd is the 20-digit code.) Check your unlock request status here: https://att.com/deviceunlock/status.html
5. Now is the time to power on the device for initial startup
6. Update phone OS (System -> Settings -> Phone Update) and restart when completed
7. Sign into a Microsoft account to install applications
8. Once you receive the 2nd email within 24 hrs. for the 20-digit code, dial ##7820# on keypad (NOT emergency dialer!) to access SIM unlock screen with the padlock symbol.
9. Enter the 20-digit code
10. The padlock symbol will change to unlock within 15-30 seconds.

Thanks. Picked one up as a backup and travel phone. Looks like it will get band 12 LTE on t-mobile once it's unlocked. I had a $15 off $50 one time use coupons also stacked with the education store 10% off. Got this coupon back in January with email titled "Thank you for shopping with us". Final price as $60 with sales tax. Great deal.

Can it be unlocked using the procedure above if I live abroad? Would it require access to AT&T network?

A couple of similar forum postings (last few days) provide AT&T details of unlocking. You are advised to use the Non AT&T customer account basis. By going to their page and filling in the required items . AT&T reserves the right to refuse! it also requires you also (temporarily) put a non-AT&T sim in or access the phones special menu (directions are out there) and then putting in the unlocking code that AT&T will email you. I do not know if you can buy this overseas - so I am assuming you are in the U.S, and have access to Microsoft store or a Target or Walmart (which just lowered price to match).

I currently plan on putting a European T-mobile sim in (needs to be cut to micro size). But, I have unlocked it already. I received a response within 24 hours. Privately, I am noting that everyone is lowering the price fast, due to announcements of pending release of a newer Nokia (9XX) model, maybe one reason?

Thanks for the tip about the $15 off code, I also had one in my mailbox. $56.10 after education discount plus cashback. Now I am kind of glad my local Target was sold out.

Are there any benefits to purchasing the T-Mobile version vs buying the AT&T and unlocking? I can't seem to find a difference except maybe the wifi calling.

On the side note, I found a promo code from January for 15 off 50 but seems it's not working with my EDU discount.
