Overrated. The book reads like a cook book. Its more descriptions on how to process oxygen than an actual story.

Part of the genius of this book is just how technically correct it is in describing the challenges and what it would take to overcome them.

I fairly certain that the Hollywood version will leave out any need for thinking in their Jason Bourne in space version..... I just hope they don't completely butcher this one like they did Ludlum's books. Mad

Good prices but keep in mind that "no-rush shipping " credit won't apply since they are sold by Random House and not Amazon.

Part of that genius is also what turned into a story that was less character-driven than it could have been. At about halfway, the book becomes less about the main character, and more about set-piece plot points. Still a good book, but if as much time had been spent on the psychology as was spent on the engineering of being alone on Mars, it would have been a great book. The Martian is sort of diametrically opposed to Moon that way.

Hollywood will probably gloss over the "engineering" aspects in favor of explosions and interminable "romantic flashbacks to give the depressed astronaut a reason to want to go home", since "I don't want to die on Mars" won't be enough. I doubt poop potatoes and gradually enjoying disco make it.

I thought this book was great. I learned about it from the movie trailer of course. I was disappointed with how it ended. I wanted it to go into detail about what his life was like after returning.

Looks like Amazon is having another of their weird $1.99 book sales that they don't publicize or put together on one page. Pro-tip: click through the "Customers also bought" section and you'll find a lot more $1.99 books.

Some that I found (sorry no links, I should be working)

Aziz Ansari - Modern Romance (just came out like a month ago!)
Mindy Kaling - Is Everyone Hanging Out Without Me
Gillian Flynn - Dark Places
John Green - Looking for Alaska
Max Brooks - Zombie Survival Guide
Sheryl Sandberg - Lean In

and for $2.99:
Margret Atwood - Oryx and Crake
Bret Easton Ellis - American Psycho

And don't listen to the hater - The Martian was fantastic. It does get really technical, but if I could follow it with my Humanities education, anybody can. Bonus points for the science being realistic (or so they say). It alternates between laugh out loud funny and white knuckle excitement. Very much looking forward to the movie.

EDIT: looks like somebody beat me to a lot of these up above. With links!
