What are the best settings for deal alerts?

The-Alchemist 10,606 2,006 September 6, 2015 at 10:37 AM
Getting a smart watch soon so I can have alerts pushed to it. How can I optimize it? I don't want to miss crazy price mistakes and stuff like that but I don't want to get flooded.

Cool! I've always thought about a smart watch but never found one that I liked. Try this post about Deal Alerts and see if it answers your question - https://slickdeals.net/forums/showpost.php?p=67718300&postcount=540

Jabbit - This has been a concern to me and maybe this is the best thread to share it.. I have set up alert with my gmail ID and everytime I get to the SD thread , there are already 10-12 posts and this inspite of me reading the email within 10-15 sec once it hits my inbox..

Is there anything that we are not aware of and is exclusive to few users ?

No, not at all. However I'm not sure what specificallywould cause the delay. You could always post a question in our Site Questions, Issues, and Suggestions sub-forum and a developer might be able to give you more details. Some of the hottest deals receive multiple posts per minute so in theory even if the e-mail reaches you in just a few minutes, it could already have quite a few posts.

Hope that helps, let me know if you have any more questions.

From my understanding if you have the SD app on your phone and setup for notifications it should instantly push to pebble. Unlike with email there is bit of a delay

The issue is the battery life.. SD app for some reason sucks and I hardly get 4-5 battery once fully charged.

I don't have any problems with battery life running the SD app. Are you on a power hungry android device?

Also, slick deals has RSS feeds which you might be able to do something with that. But I don't know much about rss feeds.

It's nearly impossible to find things like price mistakes unless you are actively perusing hot deals or have specific alerts setup. A LOT of people simply do deal alerts for "price mistake" but I don't find that to be very reliable. Case in point was a deal I posted with the words "price" and "mistake" but in totally different paragraphs. It still triggered everyone's alerts and I got down voted to hell. Furthermore not everything that is a price mistake will be posted as such.

You can play around with the price mistake stuff, but I've learned to only setup very specific alerts for stuff I'm looking to buy so that I'm not inundated with notifications.

fwiw, follower notifications come before deal alerts (presumably because the system doesn't have to try to match anything...it literally notifies users of every thread posted by someone they are following), which could explain the existing posts. if there are certain members who post things of interest to you frequently, i suggest following them if you wish to be notified sooner.

There are trade offs between how quickly you're notified and duplicates false positives. I recommend setting a requirement of at least 3 thumbs up.
