Docsis 3.1 is based on a Gbps downstream standard. Current residential cable service is nowhere near those speeds and unlikely to get there any time soon in the US.

Quote :
DOCSIS 3.1

First released October 2013, and updated several times since. The DOCSIS 3.1 suite of specifications supports capacities of at least 10 Gbit/s downstream and 1 Gbit/s upstream using 4096 QAM. The new specs do away with 6 MHz and 8 MHz wide channel spacing and instead use smaller (20 kHz to 50 kHz wide) orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (OFDM) subcarriers; these can be bonded inside a block spectrum that could end up being about 200 MHz wide.[5] DOCSIS 3.1 technology also includes some new energy management features that will help the cable industry reduce its carbon footprint.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DOCSIS

If you are looking to future proof, unless you are subscribed to the top service tier, your downstream speed is unlikely to reach max supported speeds of the SB6183 anytime soon. Currently the SB6183 and other 16 bonded downstream channel modems are supported by TWC up to 300 Mbps [timewarnercable.com] and the Extreme 250 service level by Comcast [comcast.net].

One thing I don't like about the SB6183 is that it's got super bright led's that are really distracting and annoying. I had to move it behind the monitor.

This sounds stupid but will this work with all ISP? Is it a better upgrade than the one they lease to you? I have 8mbps with EntouchSystem in Houston.

Personally I prefer separate Wifi , but to each their own. TP link has an interesting all in one unit, but it is nearly twice the price.

For those of you getting taxed by Amazon.com, another option is to pricematch with Newegg. They will price match Amazon.com, in the form of $31 Newegg store credit and it must be used within 90 days.

The amazon product page offers a 2 year squaretrade warranty, but you can buy up to 4 years through this link
http://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B008I64LTY/

Amazon tries to recommend a PC Peripherals warranty. Does that make sense, or should I get an electronics warranty?

Thanks OP, I bought one!
