Change default thread view to "old" style?

wwjrd 5,321 596 October 22, 2015 at 02:54 PM
Somewhat not too far back the site changed to make you click a link called "view original thread" but i was wondering: is there a way to make that the default?

Thanks.

you can change to the classic version of the site by clicking the link in the site footer. i hope this helps!

What many of us would like to know if it is ever going to be possible to go directly to the forum view in the redesign instead of having to dick around looking for the 'view forum thread' link which is never in a convenient location. I want to be able to use some of the features in the redesign but can't tolerate the hideous new look for very long without getting a headache from it. Why can't we have the option of setting our options to go to the much better looking forum view within the redesign?

Why can't they move the "view forum thread" button/hyperlink to the top of the redesign view? It's currently buried far below the first post and wiki post, and isn't convenient, at all. This was one of my original suggestions / requests regarding the redesign view that has never been acknowledged. Annoyed

That would help a little bit but even that would still be useless in many cases. Unless a thread is new I usually enter the thread by using one of the 'go to first new post' buttons. With the 'view forum thread all the way at the top it would still be a pain in the ass to scroll up to use. I suppose I could open the thread first, click on the 'view forum thread' link, and then click the 'first unread' button but why should I have to do all those extra steps at all to get to where I want to be?

I just tried that and it doesn't work either. Apparently when I open the thread in the front page view directly it still marks all the posts as read and then when I click on the 'view forum thread' it doesn't recognize that there are still unread posts.

I don't get why I can't have the option of not seeing the stupid front page view at all when I open a thread? When I open a thread I should be able to go directly to the forum view without having to suffer through that butt-ugly harsh-looking overabundance of white and wasted space and countless ads that I don't want to see in the first place.

Currently forced to use a thread version of the front page, there is no classic link in a footer. Site was fine with classic view an hour ago. Refreshing the front page to classic view just shows a thread view with thumbnails. Crazy to see such a forced use of a page while it all comes down to the elements of the page and the CSS. Good thing slick deal isn't taking the urlhasbeenblocked approach, nvm. nvm.......... Feels bad man. Can't imagine how it's like to sell out so hard just to force multiple paid ad's to be the most "popular". Hope you people are getting paid enough to justify the page changes and massive ad's. Not like forced ad's have ever ruined sites.

Amazingly after posting this the front page defaulted back to the grid view and had the view selection back. Please stop publishing updates no one is testing. And stop the paid placements.

The white view is the redesign thread view. You get it by default because you are opted in to redesign. The option to view threads in the classic look is to opt out back to classic.

Facepalm
Do you ever even use this site except to give dumb answers to questions over and over again?

No, opting back to classic is not the only option to view threads in the classic look. It is one option but surprisingly there are some features in the redesign that some of us like and instead of a half-assed solution like you propose we would like to have the best Slickdeals experience possible. So currently our best option is to use the redesign, open the threads, search for the "view forum thread" link, and click on that to be able to read the thread in the more eye-friendly classic look but still be in the redesign.

All we are asking is to be able to have the option of going to that view directly instead of having to run around in circles to get to it. Is it really that difficult to understand that what we want is already available to us and that we would just like to make it easier to get there? If that option is eventually going to be eliminated in the redesign then maybe that should be reconsidered. Why take a step backwards when the potential is there to make the site better for everyone?

Yes, and we have no plans to add such a feature, which is why I keep telling you that your only option to not open threads in redesign by default is to opt out of redesign.

So what you are saying is that there is no point in giving feedback about the redesign because Slickdeals already has a plan and that plan doesn't include caring about what the members want.

Got it Thumbup

I guess that explains why the feedback thread was hidden away in the Announcements forum instead of being put in the Questions & Issues forum where more people might have looked for it.

Pretty clever you guys are. Cool

If you're referring to this view [imgur.com], that's not the redesign view, but the old classic frontpage view. That one we are considering giving an opt-out for.

Considering, or working on it?

Marmotto seemed to indicate it was a done deal...

This is actually an old view in Classic we call "permadeal" that shows sometimes for deals which have reached the Frontpage. We're working on trying to figure out why that seems to be showing more often, and my goal is to remove that completely from Classic view.
So when is that abomination finally going to be removed?

In the meantime just force the forum view on classic until you can get around to removing it from the code.

Something like: if($classic) { $v=1; }

Happy days for all.
