"Hoverboard" explodes at kiosk in mall. I'm thinking it's not exactly a good sales pitch.

KENT, AUBURN, Wash. —
Shoppers at the Outlet Connection Mall in Auburn were evacuated Tuesday morning after a so-called hoverboard burst into flames, sending a portion of it shooting across the floor.
The board, a two-wheeled stand-up riding board, was next to one that was being ridden by a man when Kelli Steiner saw it explode.

At least if it's the same kind of 'hoverboard' I've seen on the news recently.
Somebody wake me up when we have BTTF styled ones with no wheels on them that actually hover.

And I heard this AM on the news that some airlines have banned their transport aboard their planes. Remember the battery fires that the new Dreamliner had issues with? Same kind of thing.
A US government agency is investigating the two-wheeled scooters after receiving at least 10 reports of fires.
*snip*
JetBlue, Alaska, Virgin American, Hawaiian, Spirit and Allegiant have all previously banned hoverboards, and Southwest is having internal discussions on how best to handle the devices.
*snip*
Given the concerns about fires, the International Air Transport Association (IATA) has recommended that the scooters be transported only as carry-on luggage. Each airline is responsible for making its own decision about banning the devices.

Sales of the devices in the UK have taken off, despite the fact that it is illegal to ride [gov.uk] them on public roads and sidewalks. On Thursday, a 15-year-old riding a hoverboard died in a crash [bbc.co.uk] with a bus in London.

Blazing hot. Smoking, even!
The missing Malaysian Airlines plane was carrying a large cargo of lithium batteries when it disappeared. I think it's likely there was a fire on-board, so they made an abrupt turn to try to reach the nearest airport but then were overcome by the smoke.
From 2014:
According to US-based Federal Aviation Administration, lithium-ion batteries carried in the cargo or baggage have been responsible for more than 140 incidents between March 1991 and February 17 this year (2014).
In one case, UPS Airlines Flight 6 crashed while attempting an emergency landing in September 2010 en route from Dubai to Cologne in Germany.
The United Arab Emirates' General Civil Aviation Authority blamed the crash, which killed the crew, on the batteries which it believed may have 'auto-ignited' and filled the flight deck with smoke.
