Thread Details

It's that time of year again when Garage sales are popular. I have seen some discussion of Garage Sales in regular discussion threads, and perhaps there is talk of it in the BS thread, but I think it would be good to have it's own thread and people can add in the WIKI what sold for them and at what price - or what they will sell it for.

This way people having a garage sale can have a nice reference sheet and can learn from the mistakes of others. I will post in the WIKI info I have read.

Yes, I am having a garage sale this weekend at a friends work. I have read some info on another site and it is nice that they have their own thread for this.

Garage sales are not for everyone, please no bashing on those who wish to do it. It's a way to make money to buy more coupons and fuel your 'addiction'. LOL!

Mods, if you think this would be better suited in a different forum, please advise or move. I just thought it would be good to have a garage sale discussion and a WIKI to boot to help others.

Thanks!

Vicki

PLEASE NOTE: This WIKI is a reference guide to price the items you may have. Know your states laws before selling new unopened items or medicine. Laws vary from state to state, and can from city to city on what is allowed to be sold at a garage sale or flea market. Sell at your own risk. Thanks!

Garage Sale Tips:
- Use a muffin tin to keep coin denominations separated.
- A fishing tackle box is a great way to keep money safe and organized - coins separated in the compartments, and bills underneath. Some even have locks
- Use a carpenter's apron with pockets in the front. Works great, bills and .5 and .10 on one side, .25 on the other. It goes with you, for safety and convenience. Works great for school concession stands too..

Prices here in the wiki show a range of prices SDers have gotten for each product/item.

*Please post what you sold items at in your individual post - and if you are in a big metropolis or not - this sometimes makes a difference.*

Does anyone get $4 for the 23 oz Head & Shoulders? It usually sells for 6.79-7.99 at the stores. Last year I sold the 13 oz for $3 or 2/$5 and they sold well.
I would think they would do fine at that price so long as you can sell the smaller ones at $3 or 2/$5.

What are people asking for the Schick Hydro Silk razor with the Skintimate gel that are $5.97 at Walmart? Even with the $4 coupon, I paid $1.97 for each, so I'm thinking $4. The same razor sells for $9 something at Target without the free Skintimate.
I put $5 on mine and they seem to be doing okay selling privately at this point.

As far as the garage sale article...I think it's all a bit too much. People can sit at flea markets and resell stuff but I cannot do so at my own house?! And what about all those mom and pop shops!? I used to sell stuff to the owners of mom and pop shops! Lol. I think it all goes back to people are being a little too nosey these days. Getting involved in things that don't concern them because they're bored and/or unhappy with their lives.

Anyways...how do people plan to price the similasan and nasal ease sprays? I was thinking $2 and $4 respectively. Too much?

Someone complained about me also and the HOA had a meeting tonight and brought me up. In less than 2 weeks they are having a community garage sale and will let me know by Friday if I am banned or not. Unreal. I have about 50 people in my small community who shop with me too but as usual one ahole ruins it all. Since I cannot sell it either(banned from that too) I would be stuck with about 6k in products and have no way of getting rid of it. I was told that my laundry detergent that I keep in the garage is a dangerous material also. WTF? Oh yah I was also told that I have too many items for sale and they did not like that. WTF? Finally, I was told they did not like the foot traffic that my garage sales brought. WTF?
That's a bunch of BS. Hell, I'm just up the road from you just south of Jacksonville, and half of the homes here have washer/dryers in the garage. They were built that way! Smilie Wonder if all of those homes are fire hazards, too. People are nuts, and need to mind their own damn business.

What about any of the flea markets around? I know it's a pain to have to haul it, but I know Daytona has flea markets you could sell at. I know the rule at the ones here is two booths per year before they make you file for a business license. So, that might be a though. If not, let me know - I might be interested in purchasing some of your stock.

Break up the set, sell the razor for $5 and the gel for $2. That's what I do when I get those types of deals.

The flea markets around here require permits from the county and the city which would cost me around $150. They told me at the meeting last night that the hoa bylaws restrict what I sell at garage sales but there is nothing in it that says that. They also said the city does not allow retail goods sold at garage sales but that is also not true. No matter what they say they cannot stop me from having a garage sale and I will have it anyway. The funny thing is they even told me the HOA does allow home businesses but not if you have foot traffic. Not true. The HOA restricts all businesses whether you sell or have people come over. Many of the board members run a business out of their home so while trying to cherry pick me they are themselves violating their own HOA charter. What really chaffs me is the HOA is hated so nobody goes to the meetings which means 4-6 people control what everyone does.

It's really crazy the restrictions some towns and HOAs are putting on garage sales. This country was founded on free enterprise. A lot of good comes from individuals selling; it fills a need in the community. Some of the same communities that are restricting garage sales are soliciting big businesses and giving tax breaks away! Stand up for your rights; go to the HOA meetings or city council meetings and make waves to get their rules changed!

I haven't even been in this area of the site for like 2 years or something! I stopped couponing cold turkey. It was just getting so bad with no stock, cashiers being even bigger jerks etc etc etc...

I changed my game-plan, but I do miss couponing. Thinking trying to get back in the game, but so not sure.

It's funny how people added that extra layer of gov. called the HOA. Stick Out Tongue

WOW, That's terrible!!! EEK! Were you also selling used items (shoes, clothing, dishes, blankets, furniture, etc?) I ask because if you have a table of typical garage sale items for sale along with new merchandise how could they shut you down with used items for sale as well? I plan on having 3 sales this spring/summer, but I also am going to be selling used furniture, blankets, clothing,etc... I have people calling & or texting me frequently to purchase stuff. If you can get their first name & number maybe you can do inside sales. Good luck and I'm so sorry this happened to you. hug

I had a regular stop by on Sunday night and I was sleeping & kind of out of it. Anyways, I'm so sorry I told him $2 for Zantac because he bought all 34 that I had. Next week when it's on sale again for $.99 I'll definitely change the price to $3.

Another issue is the high amount of stolen merchandise showing up at the swap meets right now. If you're doing a sale, make sure to save all of your receipts and avoid buying and selling anything with a store security label on it. Be aware that if you sell to people who sell at the swap meets and those people are also buying stolen merchandise, if they get caught they may say that they got everything from you.

The city is being so stupid about this. Rather than limit what we can sell at a garage sale, they should be happy because they're getting the sales tax from the retail purchases. The guy above has $20,000 of stuff - that's a lot of sales tax that will be gone if they shut him down and he stops shopping. Don't they realize that when it's just used stuff, they get nothing? When it's new stuff, it helps everybody except the guy who complains (who usually is another seller).

I sell them for $3.50. They don't sell really fast but eventually, at the end of the sale, they are all gone Smilie
BTW, my prices for all the other stuff is lower that most prices posted here (meaning my customers are cheap laugh out loud)
