Here's the rundown on the new program. Brace yourselves. Instead of one star per purchase, it's going to be about how much money you spend.

* 2 stars for each dollar you spend from a registered Starbucks card
* Everyone starts at green level
* Earn 300 stars each year to achieve/maintain Gold level

At Green Level you get:
*A free birthday item (food/beverage) every year
*Free refills on brewed coffee/tea
*Mobile order and pay
* Custom offers on items you enjoy when you opt in to receive My Starbucks Rewards email
*Members-only in-store offers and promotion

At Gold level you get:
*All the benefits of Green Level plus....
*Any free beverage or food item per 125 stars you earn
*Double star days

So it's roughly the same amount spent to get a free one. Not sure how to take this new system.

Announcement: More Stars. More Things To Love. [starbucks.com]
THIS APRIL, WE'RE INTRODUCING THE NEW STARBUCKS REWARDS™

It's an exciting new program that reflects the #1 request we heard from members: more Stars awarded based on what you buy, no matter how often you visit.

The things you love about the program today—like birthday drinks, free refills and access to order and pay ahead with your phone—are staying the same. The big news is that, in the new Starbucks Rewards, you'll earn 2 Stars for every $1 you spend, which means more Stars for your favorites—from coffee and drinks to food, mugs and more.

WHAT'S CHANGING?

TODAYAPRIL
1 Star per visit2 Stars per $1 spent
30 Stars to Gold level300 Stars to Gold level
12 Stars for a free reward (Gold)125 Stars for a free reward (Gold)
Three levels: Welcome, Green, GoldTwo levels: Green, Gold
 Monthly Double-Star Days NEW

MORE STARS THAN EVER

Collecting Stars is simple: You'll earn 2 Stars for every $1 you spend, no matter what you spend it on. You'll also have additional opportunities to earn more Stars with special offers, as well as monthly Double-Star Days for Gold members.

And it's not just your dollars that will earn you more Stars. In the new program, your change will count towards partial Stars. We'll keep track of those partial Stars and apply them to your Star total.

Here's a pic of the pamphlet given to baristas. The change happens in April.

What happens to my Gold/Green/Welcome Status when the new program launches?
If you are a Green or Gold member, you will maintain your status after the new program launches.
If you are at the Welcome level, you'll automatically be upgraded to Green status. We've removed the Welcome Tier so that you can enjoy Green-level benefits right away.

What will happen to the Stars I have in my account when the new Starbucks Rewards launches?
You'll keep all of the Stars you've already earned. When the new Starbucks Rewards launches in April, your Stars will multiply to reflect the update.
Every 1 Star you have will be multiplied by 11 when we transition to the new program. For example, if you have 10 Stars the day before launch, you will have 110 Stars when the new Starbucks Rewards launches.

Revenue based model like airline frequent flyer programs!

Ew. 30+ cups of coffee for a free drink instead of 12.

It works for the people who regularly buy food or expensive drinks, but not the coffee drinkers. I imagine most people fall into this area. Rewarding customers for spending money makes more sense than the current system.

I mostly only use the card for free refills. That's not going anywhere according to this, so no substantial loss for me.

Previously 12 coffees at $2.70 each would get a free drink.

Now I'd need to purchase 21. That's pretty crappy.

Not a huge Starbucks drinker, but their rewards program has been the one I have always been a fan of due to the simplicity.

A lot more spend to get a free item, assuming $2.15 coffee...

125 stars / 2 stars per dollar = $62.50 spend

$62.50 / 12 stars (current program) = $5.21 (spend per current program star) = additional 242% spend for a free drink

also in the current program, $2.15 * 30 = $64.5 maintains Gold status. Now it'll be $150, or a 232% increase!

math is closer if you tend to buy more expensive drinks on a regular basis

not to mention $150 dollars before you even start earning rewards towards free food/drink!

So, they figured out why I was going back in line to purchase one item at a time.

Spend $150 a year for gold, and spend $62.50 to get one free item...unless your average purchase is >$5.21, the new system is significantly worse.

Any idea when this happens?

I would just order 4 things and pay for each separately. guess the people in line behind me will be happy about this but not me
