Most Linux distros with a light Desktop environment like Mate or XFCE also run great on older hardware.

Make most old dual core laptops usable by installing a SSD harddrive.

Funny, I was just researching this last week. Been thinking about trying this on my old Samsung NC10 Netbook. From what I read, the NC10 is a perfect candidate for this mod. I'm not a computer nerd so maybe this Neverware download is worth a shot. Anyone try this yet??

Just noticed that Neverware requires Windows 7 or later. I think my NC10 is XP so I'm gonna have to go another route.

True, but I've yet to find one that has a straight-forward option for enabling automatic updates that require no user intervention. This does that, which makes it a good solution for a laptop for grandma.

For a limited use environment like web browsing and email, no question a Chromebook is easier use and maintain. The benefit of running a Linux distro is you have a full Desktop environment with access to all the software repositories.

Probably not going to be a good experience. The problem is modern web browsers require lots of RAM (>2GB) to run well, typically not found on hardware that old.

I just installed a 128GB SSD I got from a Slickdeal in an ancient 2007 iMac that was about to end up getting trashed or donated. Holy cow, it now runs El Capitan like it is a current computer! So worth it.

Worthless thread then. No use to me.

For old pc's give Lubuntu (or any other light Linux distro) a try. No dependence on google stuff.

I have Lubuntu on Samsung NC10 (with a 120gb ssd and 2gb ram), and it runs great.
