I'd say this is a good deal but that i7 won't do as well as one would think. I did a more or less custom Alpha building off some used parts and it came out to be roughly the same as the price listed here. The i7 4770t I got runs 3.3-3.5 most of the time so the turbo of this will be beneath the i3 the base units ships with at 2.9.

It's "decent". The base model with an i3 and 500GB HD and 4GB RAM has gone for ~$300, this is pretty much the best configuration and is worth a little bit more. That being said, an SSD is still a suggested upgrade.

Also, a refresh is likely in the next few months. Nvidia is rumored to be launching their mobile Pascal GPU's in June and we could see a refreshed Alpha with a new Intel Skylake and a brand new Pascal mobile GPU. If they keep similar pricing on the refresh, you'd be mighty disappointed in the $600 you just spent.

1. It's an Alien ware
2. It has an i7
3. It has a dedicated GPU
4. It has Windows 10
5. It has 8 GB RAM

You decide.

I bought mine over a year ago - quad i5/8GB/1TB for around $430 I think, then spent whatever it cost to buy a 512GB SSD to put in there... and it's good. The SSD is a required upgrade.

It's a fantastic deal for playing games at a reasonable price.

That said, I'd be wary of buying one right now when it's definitely due for a refresh any day now... and you'll be kicking yourself for not getting the upgraded processor/GPU.

Is it possible to swap out the GTX 860 for a GTX 970 or 980?

Well yeah for the 5400 RPM drives but they now come with 7200 RPM drives and they are quite usable.

Hahaha no.... it has an 860m not a desktop sized card...

In fact the entire thing is only a little bigger than those Intel NUCs.
